In France, 1 in 6 patients admitted with Covid has died in hospital since the start of the pandemic

According to data from Public Health France, 597,421 French people have been admitted to hospital since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. 101,215 died there, i.e. 1 in 6 patients. In Occitania, the figure is higher.

The figure is telling and sends shivers down your spine: a person entering hospital with Covid would have a 1 in 6 risk of dying there.

According to data from Public Health France disseminated daily, France has indeed seen 496,206 people recover from Covid after being admitted to hospital. Conversely, 101,215 have died in French hospitals since the start of the pandemic.

Up to 1 in 3 patients died at the height of the crisis

On average, France has seen almost 15% of its patients with Covid die since March 2020.

At the very start of the pandemic, this figure even peaked at almost 30% of patients on March 30, 2020. That week, 1 in 3 patients admitted with Covid to French hospitals would die there. A figure that helps to understand how much pressure the hospital was under during the first wave when there were up to 32,000 patients admitted at the same time.

Since the beginning of the massive vaccination campaign, these data have been considerably revised downwards. In recent weeks, the percentage of patients who die in hospital has fallen sharply (11%). Thus, currently, it is 1 in 10 patients who die with Covid in hospital.

It will take several more days to fully measure the impact of Omicron on French hospitals. If the theory of the lesser danger of the virus is confirmed, the gap between the deceased and those who have returned to their homes should continue to increase.

And in Occitania?

Locally, the figures are even higher since one patient in 5 who enters hospital in Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales dies with Covid-19. This is more than the regional average which is at the same level as the rest of the country. In Occitania, 16% of hospitalized people die with Covid according to official figures.

Currently, in France, 28,515 people are hospitalized, including 3,746 in intensive care.

It should be noted that these data from Santé Publique France do not differentiate between patients admitted specifically for Covid and those who were admitted for another reason and whose PCR or antigen test result turned out to be positive. Under the effect of Omicron, the share of people currently hospitalized with Covid is falling. They still represent a large majority with 75% of patients. 25% of patients tested positive after admission to hospital for another pathology.
