In Egypt, they picked up 59 sarcophagi, one of which opened directly in front of journalists

The published photographs show colorfully painted and well-preserved wooden coffins. There are mummies in most of them. It has been buried in Saqqara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for more than 3,000 years and has served as a burial ground for the former capital of Lower Egypt, Memphis, for over two millennia.

The most famous of the at least eleven pyramids in Saqqara is the stepped one, which was built by King Djoser of the 3rd dynasty. The building is 4700 years old and is considered to be the oldest of the preserved pyramids in Egypt. The builder of a six-storey tomb about 60 meters high was the royal architect Imhotep, sometimes referred to as the first architect ever.

“I consider it the beginning of a great discovery,” said Anání. He added that an unknown number of other sarcophagi would be picked up. Those highlighted were exhibited during the press conference. And one of them, which contains a mummy, was opened to journalists. The event was also attended by several foreign diplomats.

New museum

The finding of the first part of the sarcophagi, a total of thirteen of them, was announced by representatives of the Ministry of Monuments and Tourism last month. They were located in a newly found shaft, 11 meters deep.

Anni said the sarcophagi of Saqqara, along with 30 wooden coffins found in Luxor on the upper Nile, will be in a new museum the country is building near the Giza pyramids.
