In Eastern Ukraine, the situation is exacerbated by only one side, and that is Russia / Article / LSM.lv

During their visit to Kiev on Thursday, the Baltic foreign ministers expressed support for Ukraine, at the borders of which there has been recent increased activity of the Russian army. Ministers acknowledged that if the situation worsened, the European Union could decide on broader sanctions against Russia.

“We must also continue to provide all kinds of diplomatic and political assistance to reduce tensions, but we do not call on both sides to do so, as there is only one side that is escalating and exerting military pressure,” said Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs (New Unity). ).

At the moment, it is too early to talk about new sanctions, but the question of how the European Union should respond to the tensions at Ukraine’s borders will be discussed by EU Foreign Ministers with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleb on Monday.

“Ukraine expects, first of all, solidarity and active political and diplomatic work from the EU, NATO and their member states. If the situation continues to deteriorate, then undoubtedly extensive economic sanctions [pret Krieviju] is what the Ukrainian side would like to see from the EU and other organizations and countries supporting Ukraine, ”Rinkēvičs said in an interview with Latvijas Radio.

“There will be extensive economic sanctions if the situation worsens. Political activity is quite high, but if we see that it is not working, then there will be next steps. We stand ready to play an active role, both within the EU and in other international organizations, precisely in the face of this political-diplomatic pressure, in the context of broader sanctions, and of course we will discuss with NATO allies how the Alliance can best support Ukraine. “

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba points out that Russian officials and opinion leaders are openly threatening Ukraine with war and the destruction of Ukrainian statehood.

“Ukraine’s red line is the border line of our country. If Russia breaks this red line, it will have to suffer. But I hope so diplomatic efforts, including this visit, will help us to prevent this and, in the long run, help us to regain the territories of Ukraine that are currently occupied.

CONTEXT:

In recent weeks, concerns about the situation in Eastern Ukraine have been significantly increased. At the end of March, Ukraine reported that Russia was concentrating its troops on the Ukrainian border and that Moscow-backed separatist militants were constantly violating last year’s ceasefire agreement.

In the spring of 2014, a conflict began in the eastern part of Ukraine. Soon after the Crimean Autonomous Region of Ukraine annexed by Russia. In February 2015 in Minsk with the participation of the leaders of Germany and France, as well as the President of Russia agreement has been reached on 13 points in the peace plan, which provided for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the line of conflict between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists. Since then, both sides in the conflict have reported violations of the ceasefire from time to time.
