Former Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars Nariman Dzhelyalov tightened pipeline damage indictment near Simferopol. The politician’s lawyer Nikolai Polozov posted an appeal from his client on Facebook.

According to Polozov, Dzhelyalov was initially accused of “complicity in committing sabotage,” however, during the investigation, the article was reclassified as “full participation” in it.

The lawyer clarified that after the charges were brought, the politician was interrogated. “Nariman Dzhelyalov used the right of the accused not to testify,” the lawyer said. He stressed that 12 examinations have been appointed in the case of the ex-deputy chairman of the Mejlis, “some of which have already been carried out.”

The investigation prohibited the defenders of Dzhelyalov from disclosing a number of information

In addition, the investigation prohibited Dzhelyalov’s defenders from disclosing the following information: testimonies of persons who became known in the course of the investigative actions (with the exception of the words of the person involved), as well as the conclusions of expert studies and data from the participants in the pre-trial proceedings.

Dzhelyalov is kept in a double cell

Polozov said that Nariman Dzhelyalov is being held in the remand prison in Simferopol in a double cell with another inmate. The state of health of the politician is satisfactory, the mood is positive, the lawyer assures. The President of Ukraine linked the detention with the work of the Crimean platform

Earlier, on September 5, another lawyer of Dzhelyalov, Emine Avamilyova, reported that her client was suspected of sabotage in the framework of the case on damaging a gas pipeline near Simferopol. According to her, the politician was kept in torture conditions – in handcuffs with a bag on his head, without food and water. Dzhelyalov did not admit his guilt. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky linked the arrest of the politician with the start of the Crimean platform.

US State Department urged the Russian authorities to release the politician

Within the framework of the case under the article on the deliberate destruction or damage of property, on September 3 and 4, searches were carried out in the house of five Crimean Tatars, all of them were detained… To find out about their fate, the relatives of the detainees, lawyers and activists – about 50 people in total – came on September 4 to the building of the Federal Security Service in Simferopol and were also detained.

The US State Department has appealed to the Russian authorities to immediately release Nariman Dzhelyalov and at least 45 other Crimean Tatars. “This is the latest in a long line of politically motivated raids, detentions and punitive measures against the Mejlis and its leadership, which have been repressed for resisting Russia’s attempt to annex Crimea,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said. Prior to this, the authorities in Russia considered the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars to be an extremist organization and banned its activities in the Russian Federation.
