In Corte, the hospital has organized itself to properly manage the vaccination

After some adjustments, the Corte hospital center found its vaccination rhythm. In two months, the establishment succeeded in reducing a waiting list of 600 people, by carrying out 72 vaccinations per day. Today, appointments can be fixed the next day

The key words? Organisation. And flexibility. When you’re the only one Central Corsica hospital and that we wish to respond to a request from all territory, it is necessary to be able to master these two qualities.

Headphones on the ears, at the start of the chain, in a specially dedicated cell, Vanina Grazietti receives requests for vaccination, either at Pfizer either to l’AstraZeneca, by phone (06.85.95.60.53). For each vaccine, l’administrative agent consults the schedule and organizes Appointment, depending on availability.

“I am nicknamed Madame Covid, she has fun, because I was already in charge of arranging the appointments for the RT-PCR tests and now for the vaccines. “ A means considered more effective, especially with elderly patients, who do not master the internet. The appointments are then recorded by the hospital staff in Doctolib (the reservation platform with a health professional), a mandatory step to obtain the vaccine.

Vanina Grazietti is also responsible for contacting people on the waiting list, in case of postponement or cancellation of an appointment, so as not to lose any dose. “We have been offering vaccination since January 15, explain Charlotte Magnavacca, the director of the establishment, and doctor Marc Memmi, head of the vaccination center. With the Pfizer at the vaccination center and the AstraZeneca at the unscheduled medical reception. “

Fluid management of the waiting list

At the beginning, the hospital organized about twenty vaccinations per day. By refining its organization, it is now at the cruising speed of 72 daily vaccinations. “For the moment, everything is going well, appreciate the Dr Memmi. We had no anaphylactic shock, thanks to the work of the doctors who made an appointment upstream. We have exceeded 2,000 injections – first and second doses combined – at the vaccination center. “

“The appointment for the second dose is guaranteed from the first vaccination, adds Charlotte Magnavacca, around three to four weeks later. Supernumerary doses are always allocated, we have taken care not to lose any. For a while, we had a waiting list of 600 patients, which we managed to reduce. Today, people can get an appointment in the days that follow, or even the day after their call. “

Once the appointment has been made, patients go to the vaccination center – in the old dialysis room – at the scheduled time, with their vital card. The waiting room is a bit small, so the director of the hospital plans to set up a tent outside when the weather arrives. Then, the patients are called one by one by Vincent Poli, from the administrative department. He is in constant communication with Vanina Grazietti to readjust appointments and modify the list in real time. In front of him is the large vaccination room where the chairs are held, well spaced from each other.

Vincent Poli is responsible for recording patient visits and appointments for the second dose. At his side, Doctor André Caamano, retired surgeon, participated in the “war effort”. -

“I hope it goes well! “

Adjoining this room, two rooms. In one of them, the emergency nurse, Thierry Fabre, prepares the syringes in a dropper, just before the vaccination of each patient. A technical operation that requires a certain helping hand. But to which nurses are now accustomed. With one bottle, they manage to extract 6 or even 7 doses. Like many nurses, Thierry Fabre works in this center during his holidays or, when he is lucky, during his working time, when the day at the hospital is calm.

In the other room, a doctor is interviewing the patients. Today, it is Doctor André Caamano, retired surgeon. “The Bar Council sent us a letter asking doctors who wished to participate in ‘the war effort’, so I came, he says. I make sure that the patients have no contraindications, the risk of significant side effects. If this is the case, they are referred to the Bastia hospital, in order to have, if necessary, a resuscitation service nearby. “

On the chairs, just before vaccination, emotions are mixed. Between the hope of finally getting out of the daily fear and the fear of a complication. Francine and Gilbert, a retired couple, come to receive their first injection. “We called yesterday and we have already had an appointment, Francine is surprised. Hope it goes well!, she exclaims, laughing to get rid of this little feeling of anguish which precedes the medical act. We know Dr Caamano well, he operated on my husband’s gallbladder », she adds, somewhat reassured.

After the injection, the couple will remain quietly on their armchairs for a quarter of an hour, before being allowed to go – more relaxed than when they arrived – second date in their pocket. The advantage of living in a small area is also that, in the waiting room, you always meet at least one person you know. A factor that helps to reduce the anxiety before the injection a little.

Jeanne, 72, was able to take advantage of a niche that has just become available: “When they called me this afternoon, I wasn’t ready at all, she laughs. My husband, who is a little older, has already received both doses and it has gone well. My daughter-in-law, who is a caregiver, too. So I’m not worried ”, she remarks with a smile.

In the waiting room, discussions are going well. We are talking about the controversy around the AstraZeneca, the mistrust likely to increase in the population: “Already people did not have too much confidence before, it may get worse, notes a patient. At worst, it will benefit other vaccine manufacturers, Johnson & Johnson perhaps ”, she says.

In the evening, there is one dose left. This will be offered to a young member of the nursing staff, who was on the waiting list. Another day ends, and the hospital has once again succeeded in distributing all the prepared doses.

Next challenge: succeed in responding to new requests for first doses, while the agendas for the second will soon be full.

Corsica Center: successful decentralized days

To be as close as possible to the inland rural areas, three decentralized vaccination operations took place in Ponte-Leccia, Niolu and Bisinchi. A total of nearly 240 people from the fragile population of these territories were able to receive the first injection of the Pfizer vaccine.

In Ponte-Leccia, a temporary vaccination center was set up on 10 March. It received 60 people from the villages of the community of communes Pasquale Paoli (CCPP). On the same day, in Casamacciuli, a vaccination center was able to receive 86 priority residents of the Niolu.

On March 13, in Bisinchi, 91 people from seven municipalities (Bisinchi, Valle di Rustinu, Castellu di Rustinu, Campile, Crucichja, Ortiporiu and Penta-Acquatella) were vaccinated.

“These days went well in the three territories, no one was uneasy”, likes Cathy Cognetti, 1re vice-president of the CCPP. Asking people who have been vaccinated to report “any side effects that may have happened to them after the injection”.

Before adding: “The population has been sensitive to this approach. Everyone has made a contribution to the building: the volunteer doctors and nurses, the mayors and the administrative services of the intercommunality have played the game well. Our only regret is that, because vaccine transport constraints, the ARS did not allow us to set up an MSA bus to go and vaccinate the population in each village. We therefore opted for the solution proposed by the ARS to create decentralized vaccinations. All the appointments were made by telephone with elected officials and health personnel and we then entered the vaccination information ourselves in Doctolib “, adds Frédéric Ceccarelli, 1is Assistant to Calacuccia when the project was set up, who worked alongside Cathy Cognetti with the ARS for the realization of these days.

“We had a waiting list of people who had contacted us after ordering the vaccine,” remarks Pierre Olmeta, mayor of Bisinchi, who organized a day with the mayors of neighboring municipalities. “We were able to have them, they were immediately filled. We went to pick up the people who had requested them by minibus in their village to take them to the vaccination center.”

New vaccination days planned

The rendezvous for the recall in Ponte-Leccia and in the Niolu is set for April 7. New demands are pouring in. So much so that the vaccination centers will certainly organize new vaccination days. In Ponte-Leccia, 69 new requests have already been made. These people will be able to receive their 1st dose on the same day as those who will take their 2nde injection. In Bisinchi, the demand has been so strong that another day will certainly be organized, in addition to the one dedicated to the 2e dose. And in the Niolu also one could think of a second day, if demand demands it.
