In Colombia, tests are being carried out on an intranasal vaccine against covid | Finance | Economy

Colombia was one of the countries selected for clinical studies of a new vacuna intranasal against covid-19. The main laboratory, in charge of this research, is Blue Clare in Bogota.

This biological promises another type of immunity mainly associated with respiratory spread. In this regard, the doctor Alexander González, principal investigator of the study, highlights the benefits of this intranasal vaccine.

What is the main advantage of this vaccine?

First of all, because nasal vaccines are more accessible to people. They let them apply much easier, especially those with a fear of needles. On the other hand, there is something very interesting and that is that nasal vaccination generates an immune response specifically at the level of the nasal mucosa, which is the site where the first defense barrier against any infection is made. In this sense, this protection will be stronger, creating new defense cells such as lymphocytes and natural killer cells, which is a virus-killing cell.

So does it reduce the risks of the disease or prevent it?

The vaccine reduces the symptoms of the infection that someone may have. With the nasal spray vaccine, people who get it probably won’t have any symptoms.

When does the vaccine work?

In phase 1 and phase 2 studies, it was shown that the vaccine could protect people who had had close contact the day before inoculation, improving symptoms. That is, at 24 hours, it would generate a certain immune response against the virus, not 100%.

How is the dosage of the vaccine?

It’s two doses. The second must be applied 14 days after the first vaccination. It’s done in both nostrils, it’s done as a spray that you feel in your nose, and it’s about 0.1 milliliters.

(See: This will be the application of the fourth dose of vaccine against covid-19).

To date, how many Colombian volunteers have accessed the study?

As of Thursday morning, there were 264 people registered. In Bogotá, 500 people are needed. We opened the studio this past Tuesday. People have been calling to join the investigation.
