In the American city of Chicago, the owners of establishments en masse arrange cats to work. The reason was that the city has recently been suffering from an invasion of rodents. TSN.
“People throw away the remnants of food that are available to rats, which attracts them. In addition, now many new houses are being built in the city. After construction, many rats scatter in search of a new home, which makes them more visible,” – said the employee of the shelter for animals Rob Crowder.
The Cats at Work program was founded by a local charity. Volunteers are looking for stray cats and instead of euthanizing the animals, they are placed under the care of local companies. The duties of cats include catching rodents, and some are even required to eat and sleep.
“The pheromones of the cat help scare rats away from buildings. Their existence in this place actually tells the rats that they should not be in this area,” explained a spokeswoman for the charity Sarah Liss.
The owner of one of the local breweries, William Harley, has already appreciated the work of the mustachioed employee. There is a lot of grain at his enterprise, and this is literally a magnet for rodents. At first, they tried to solve the problem with the help of professional firms, but the number of rats did not diminish.
“I do not want rats to be killed at my enterprise with chemicals or traps. I would rather keep a natural predator. Already on the first day after their appearance in our brewery, we no longer saw rats,” said the owner of the brewery.
The services of furry employees are used in government agencies around the world. One of the most famous is Larry the cat, once the chief mouse-maker at the British Prime Minister’s residence.
