In Australia, an anti-record for the number of fatal cases of COVID

One of the largest states has a severe shortage of medical staff

For the first time in history, the state of Victoria has declared a state of emergency in the region’s hospitals.

Australian authorities on Tuesday, January 18, called the deadliest day on the continent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic – 74 people died from the disease in a day. About it informs Associated Press.

According to the publication, the deceased patients lived in the country’s three most populous states – New South Wales (36 deaths), Victoria (22) and Queensland (16).

At the same time, the previous record for mortality was recorded in the country on September 4 last year and amounted to 59 deaths.

Against the background of the complicated epidemiological situation, the leadership of Victoria for the first time in history declared an emergency in the hospitals of the state capital Melbourne and several regional medical institutions. The reason is a sharp increase in the number of hospitalizations and an acute shortage of staff. As indicated, about five thousand workers are absent in the region due to infection or close contact with COVID patients.

At the same time, the Australian government excludes the introduction of a new lockdown, as it will have serious consequences for the Australian economy and, subsequently, for every inhabitant of the country.

Note that on the continent, the introduction of a state of emergency means that some health workers may be recalled from vacation, and the provision of other services will be delayed. In addition, medical students will be encouraged to take on the duties of nurses and nurses.

As reported, last week the world confirmed over 18 million new cases infections. The WHO has warned that the next few weeks will be critical for public health.
