In Ādaži, homeowners call the change of address the loss of Latvian traditions / Article / LSM.lv

“Thus, we are losing our Latvian traditions and identity piece by piece” – the inhabitants of Ādaži region have come to such a gloomy conclusion, and the historical names of their houses will soon be replaced by impersonal addresses.

IN SHORT:

  • In Ādaži, in accordance with the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers, the address is changing.
  • Homeowners are not worried about replacing house names with street and number addresses.
  • Opposition MP: With house names, Latvia will lose part of its culture.
  • Ādaži City Council: addresses have been arranged for 2 years; there were no complaints.
  • Dome: Addresses will allow operational services to navigate better.
  • House names are allowed only in places where there are no streets, but only roads.
  • Minister of Justice: cultural heritage must also be respected, the new rules will solve it.
  • House nameplates may remain near the house.

The surroundings of Lake Atari in Ādaži municipality are really a scenic place, and the houses here are also given beautiful names – “Ezergali”, “Piekalnes”, “Kurši”, “Mēnesgaismas”.

Behind each name – your own story and your own history! However, in the near future, these names could disappear from the map and official correspondence, as the municipality has started address reform and will simply replace them with a street name and number.

Thus, for example, “Ezergalu” houses will be simply Bukultu Street 33, “Piekalnes” – Bukultu Street 31, “Mikusoni” – Ataru ceļš 16.

Normunds has been managing the recreation complex on the shores of Lake Atari, which was once called “Vosa pirti”, with his family since the end of the eighties, who moved to Ādaži from Kurzeme. Therefore, the property was christened in honor of his native side – “Curonian”. Losing that name would be painful.

“It simply came to our notice then. In any case, we will not take the names off so that they stand. People should protest more, write letters, object, maybe something else can change. Leave the same names. Let there be numbers, but the names can be left, “said Normunds, the owner of the house” Kuršu “in the village of Ataru.

Normunds’ neighbor Broņislavs has been managing the Piekalnu house on the other shore of the lake for a much shorter period of time – only 10 years. Therefore, replacing the name with a regular address is not particularly sad.

“We have no claims about it,” admitted Bronislaw.

Outraged about this reform in social networks expressed by Ādaži district opposition deputy Gundars Bojārs (Green Party). As part of the arrangement of addresses, his home “Mēnesgaismas” will become Ataru út 42.

According to him, by giving up house names, Latvia will lose part of its cultural identity.

“Naming homes is part of that culture.

Traveling the world, I tell you that our homes have words, and that evokes admiration and respect. It is a part of culture, ”Bojārs emphasized.

The Ādaži County Council explained that the arrangement of addresses has been going on for two years and so far the local government has not received any objections from either the residents or the deputies.

The reform is necessary to facilitate orienteering in the area, which is especially important not only for immigrants and couriers, but also for operational services.

As an example, I can mention, as can be seen on the map – in the place of the former garden cooperative, houses with the names “Vītoli” and different numbering have been built. But at the same time in Ādaži there is also Vītolu Street. Therefore, operative transport, responding to the call, may be confused – whether to go to Vītolu houses or Vītolu Street, ”examples were mentioned by Monika Griezne, a representative of Ādaži District Council.

There has already been a painful experience in Ādaži municipality, when firefighters are late to arrive at the right place of call due to untidy addressing.

In addition, the arrangement of such addresses, including the renunciation of house names, is required by government regulations.

“There is one law, one truth for all. That is why the Ādaži District Council, the Construction Board, the residents and the deputies of the position and opposition must comply with the norms of law and government regulations, and they stipulate that a new addressing procedure must be established, ”said Monika Griezne, a representative of Ādaži County Council.

Indeed, the Addressing Regulations adopted in 2015 state that in parts of towns and villages where there are streets, buildings must be assigned numbers linked to the street name.

House names are allowed only in places where there are no streets, but only roads.

The Ministry of Justice is responsible for this sector and is currently developing new Addressing Regulations.

“Of course, the addresses must be kept as clear as possible, especially for the work of the emergency services. However, in my opinion, Latvia’s cultural and historical heritage must be unequivocally respected and ensured, ”said the Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns (New Conservative Party).

“The names of houses are very personal feelings for Latvians, their attitude towards their home, and it is a value that the state and local governments must respect and ensure. In my opinion, with the new rules that will be adopted, we can combine both things – clarity of addresses and human rights and goodwill, ”said Bordans.

Officials are reassured – nameplates can stay near the house and everyone in the household can continue to call their house by name. However, residents are worried that if they disappear from the official documentation and maps, the names of the houses are likely to disappear from the language as well.
