The moment of the collision will occur in 2022, during the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. “The DART spacecraft will have a kinetic impact, deliberately crashing into an asteroid to change its motion in space,” NASA wrote, in its official address, quoted Sunday (6/28/2020).
DART is the first mission developed by the Planet Defense Coordination Office, which was founded in 2016, and is part of a broader planetary defense plan from NASA.
The plan is that DART will launch SpaceX’s rocket in mid-2021, then it is predicted that the moment when Dimorphos will hit it is predicted to occur towards the end of 2022.
Meanwhile, the European Space Agency (ESA), which helped NASA with its asteroid deflection plan, said Dimorphos was about 160 meters (525 ft) in diameter. That is, the same as the size of the Great Pyramid of Egypt.
On the other hand, ESA is currently developing a spacecraft named Hera, which will visit the Didymos asteroid system. But the visit occurred with the assumption that DART managed to crash into Dimorphos.
If according to plan, Hera will be launched in 2024 and will arrive in 2026 to explore new findings from the asteroid.
