By 2040, around the world, the number of people who develop liver cancer or die from it will increase by 55%, although it is a disease that can be prevented by controlling risk factors, points out an analysis by the International Agency. for Cancer Research (IARC), AFP reports.
The analysis of the IARC, belonging to the World Health Organization, based in Lyon, shows that, globally, in 2020, about 905,700 people were diagnosed with liver cancer and 830,200 died from this disease. And by 2040, 1.4 million people could be diagnosed with liver cancer and 1.3 million will die from it.
This would represent an increase of approximately 500,000, both in the number of cases and in the number of deaths per year.
The largest number of liver cancer cases and deaths occur in East and Southeast Asia and North Africa.
“This cancer is largely preventable if control efforts are made: the main risk factors are hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, alcohol consumption, excess weight and metabolic diseases. including type 2 diabetes, ”study co-author Isabelle Soerjomataram said in a statement.
