In 2013, a poison alarm was sounded. This summer, the popular bathing island reopens.

Langøyene is a popular bathing island in the Oslo Fjord. The idyllic island has been closed to the public since last spring. Beneath the surface there is something a little less idyllic.

For 40 years, the island served as Oslo’s rubbish heap. Huge amounts of rubbish were sent by barge and dumped in what was initially a strait between the two Langøyene.

Oslo Municipality is now cleaning up the contaminated soil masses. This summer you can go out here for a swim.

The long islands in the Oslo Fjord have been a popular destination for swimming and tent trips for over 60 years. The 250 meter long, crescent-shaped and southwest-facing beach is probably Oslo’s largest sandy beach.

The island is also the only one of the Oslo islands where it is allowed to spend the night in tents. But in the last year, it has not been possible for the people of Oslo to make the trip here.
