The Indonesian Minister of Research and Technology or the Head of the National Innovation Research Agency, Bambang Brodjonegoro, opened up why Indonesia imported the Covid-19 vaccine from China. The step to import finished products is carried out considering that the production capacity of Biofarma is not sufficient to meet domestic needs.
According to Bambang, if Biofarma produces its own covid vaccine, its production capacity will be 250 million doses. Meanwhile, the minimum requirement is 360 million doses.
“Here we can see, if we only rely on BioFarma, for example, the production capacity at the end of this year is 250 million. Whereas for Covid-19 alone, with a herd immunity of 180 million, we need at least 360 million doses, ”he said in a virtual discussion, Friday (22/1/2021). Even so, the former Minister of Finance said that vaccine imports should not be carried out continuously. Therefore, he encouraged other companies, especially those from the private sector, to be able to participate in producing the covidz vaccine
“But of course in the future we should not depend on whole imports from which we have to encourage from other companies,” said Bambang.
Bambang also said that he had asked the SOE Ministry for Biofarma to lead a consortium by inviting other pharmaceutical companies. It is hoped that with this collaboration, domestic vaccine needs can be met.
