Video taken after the shooting by a Chicago Sun-Times reporter shows a parade band playing while people run screaming by. A photo posted to social media appears to show pools of blood near fallen chairs in downtown Highland Park.

A local resident told the local newspaper: “I heard 20 to 25 shots fired in quick succession. So it can’t have been a handgun or shotgun.” After the shots, he saw “people in the area being shot,” including “a woman covered in blood.”

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering condemned the violence. “On a day when we came together to celebrate community and freedom, we instead mourn the tragic loss of life,” she said.

The incident in the state of Illinois follows a series of shootings in the United States that left several dead. Ten people were killed in a supermarket in upstate New York on May 14, and 19 schoolchildren and two teachers in a Texas elementary school on May 24.
