IIJmio plans to support Gigaplan 5G from 780 yen for 2GB –Engadget Japanese version

The Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) will launch the “IIJmio Mobile Service Giga Plan (Giga Plan)” on April 1 for personal mobile services.

There are 5 types of Gigaplan capacities: 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 15GB, and 20GB. The monthly charge for SIM with voice call is 780 yen for 2GB (excluding tax, same below), 980 yen for 4GB, 1380 yen for 8GB, 1680 yen for 15GB, and 1880 yen for 20GB. A SIM dedicated to data communication is 100 yen cheaper than a SIM with voice call.

Since eSIM is for data communication only, voice calls cannot be used. The specific charges are as shown in the table.

▲ 600 yen discount every month if set with IIJmio Hikari line

You can use up to 10 lines with one contract, and if you have a Gigaplan line within the same contract, you can share the data capacity. You can carry over the excess data capacity to the next month, and if the data capacity is insufficient, you can add it for 200 yen per 1GB.

If you make a domestic call, an additional charge of 20 yen per 30 seconds will normally be charged, but if you make a domestic call between the same contract names, it will be 16 yen per 30 seconds.

By making a call from the dedicated smartphone app “Miophone Dial” or by adding the prefix number (0037691) to the beginning of the calling number, it will be 10 yen per 30 seconds in Japan and overseas, and between the same contract names. Domestic calls are 8 yen per 30 seconds.

It will also support 5G from June 2021. There is no additional charge, but it cannot be used with eSIM or SIM with SMS function (Type D).

You can apply for the Giga Plan from the IIJmio website. It is also possible to purchase a package at a consumer electronics retail store or convenience store and then make a contract on the IIJmio website.

From June 2021, it will be possible to open the service on the same day at the dedicated counters set up in stores such as Bic Camera Group and Yodobashi Camera.

The 6GB eSIM beta version (light start plan) will be closed for new applications on March 25, 2021, and new applications for minimum start, light start, family share, and mobile phone run will be closed sequentially from June.

Regarding the Giga plan, Mr. Masahiro Kamei, general manager of the consumer service department of the company’s MVNO division, said at a press conference on February 24, “In the previous rate plan, it was possible to use it by adding a SIM later, but there is also an opinion that it is like an expert. Yes, I thought it would be easier to understand if one contract and one line were used. ” After that, he said, “Even though it is one plan, I want to meet various needs by separating the charge and capacity.”

▲ Five types of capacities are available, eliminating complicated discounts. In addition, the fee for switching to another company and the contract cancellation fee will be free.

I want to appeal eSIM

IIJmio discriminates against other companies by appealing eSIM amid fierce competition for mobile phone charges, such as three major mobile phone companies such as NTT DoCoMo announcing a cheap new rate plan with a data capacity of 20 GB and less than 3000 yen per month. We are trying to make it.

eSIM refers to a form in which a SIM card with contractor information written is directly incorporated into the device. Unlike physical SIMs, there is no concept of “replacement”, and most services can be applied from a dedicated website or terminal.

However, according to Mr. Kamei, the recognition of eSIM is not progressing in Japan. The reason is that you cannot use IIJmio’s eSIM on some devices without unlocking the SIM lock. But latelyView that SIM lock is prohibited in principle in JapanIs also out. Mr. Kamei says, “We will consider countermeasures for the appeal of eSIM in consultation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and industry stakeholders.”
