If you have one of these iPhones, Apple is required to pay you $ 25

Apple has reached an agreement with the plaintiffs in one of the court cases that has done more damage in its history: the “batterygate”. You must pay up 500 million dollars to be distributed among all users of iPhones affected by the “batterygate”.

In total, the Cupertino company must pay $ 25 to each user, with a minimum total payment of $ 310 million. Depending on the number of cell phones sold in the United States, this amount could reach 500 million, depending on the number of people who file a claim.

According to the news agency Reuters, the agreement must be approved by the California district court before those affected can make a claim.

Who can claim money from Apple?

Under the agreement, the owners of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone SE who have installed the iOS 10.2.1 or later operating system may claim their $ 25.

But beware, this agreement only affects people who have bought their cell phone in the United States.

What is the “batterygate”?

The “batterygate” scandal (in English) came to light in December 2017, when several Reddit users discovered that their iPhone was running at a lower clock speed than the original. Much smaller: according to tests on an iPhone 6 that had changed its original battery, the cell phone jumped from 600Mhz to 1,400Mhz – the original speed of the machine.

Apparently, Apple had introduced code into its operating system to slow down processor performance by spending time since purchasing it. CEO Tim Cook and his henchmen confirmed that, in effect, the iOS operating system slowed down the machine when the cell phone reached an age. According to the company, they had done it for “the good of the users”: being a battery that could not maintain so much charge, according to his excuse, they preferred to slow down the processor so that the iPhone suddenly shut down. If you have ever wondered why your iPhone seemed slower than at the time of purchase, this is the reason.

Of course, the “explanation” was a hoax for several reasons.

First, at no time was the user notified of this action. Quite simply, everything slowed down and, what a coincidence, it always happened when a new iPhone was released. Coincidences of life.

Second, it is a lie that the cell phone suddenly went out. And again, even if that were so, the user should be told why the slowdown and make it optional – something Apple had to do in an iOS update in the face of the scandal that formed.

And finally, Apple could also have notified the user that, by updating the cell phone’s battery, his iPhone was going to regain speed.

In short, everything smelled that Apple had been cheating its users by default so that they were inclined to buy a new iPhone every time their cell phones lost speed.

Is this the end of the scandal?

Hardly. After the batterygate came to light, many government agencies and user organizations have decided to sue and investigate the apple company.

With the 45 lawsuits that appeared in the United States and that have now been eliminated, the French government agency for the defense of the consumer opened an investigation into the “planned deception and obsolescence” of Apple. And in China, the Shanghai Consumer Council also demanded explanations about the same.

The greatest damage, however, was to his reputation. For a company that prides itself on being an advocate for the environment and honesty, the batterygate scandal really shows what paste they are made of.

In the end, like all corporations, everything is done for the dollar.
