If you don’t get vaccinated, the epidemic won’t go away, says Prymula

When the Minister of Health Roman Prymula announced on Wednesday that a state of emergency would return to the Czech Republic from Monday, he also introduced a number of tougher measures to reduce the reproductive number below one during its fortnightly validity and thus slow down the spread of the virus in society. .

Prymula said at the time that after the end of tough measures, in 14 days, if the R number was reduced, it will announce further, but much milder, so-called maintenance measures, which we will have to endure until the vaccine arrives and citizens’ lives can return to normal.

Prymula: Vaccination is easier than measures, the economy can’t stand it

The news therefore asked Prymula what would happen if most citizens refused to get vaccinated on covid, and the vaccine would not be the “salvation” of the coronavirus epidemic. The Czechs’ low willingness to get vaccinated is evident, for example, in the case of the flu; only six to eight percent of people are interested in this vaccine.

“If, unfortunately, there was a situation where only eight percent of the population was vaccinated, I dare say that the virus would continue to circulate at a similar rate. Then we would act in a similar spasm for many more months. However, I hope that this will not happen and people will understand that the vaccination is really in place here, “said the Minister when asked by Novinek.

According to him, vaccination is first and foremost a much easier way than social and economic measures. “The economy just wouldn’t last, we can’t stay in a limited economic relationship for two years,” he added.

According to him, a combination of two factors will help to manage the epidemic: relatively high vaccination coverage and then population penetration. “It will be a combination of a certain population penetration, which will be a smaller part, and then those who are vaccinated. And I think we will be forced to get about 60 percent vaccination, otherwise the virus will continue to circulate intensively, “Prymula said.

Healthcare professionals should protect their patients

Vaccination should be voluntary and paid for by the state, according to the vaccinologist and member of the departmental working group for the release of Roman Chlibek’s measures.

According to him, in case of public interest, the Ministry will appeal mainly to medical and social workers to undergo vaccination on covid for reasons of protection of their clients. Critical infrastructure staff should also be vaccinated to prevent staff collapses in key areas.

“Every doctor should try to protect his patient and if it is quite common for healthcare professionals to get vaccinated against hepatitis B virus, for example, even though its incidence is minimal and there are dozens of cases a year, it should just as well become a professional honor and that vaccination against covid, “says Chlíbek.
