“If we don’t close the schools, nobody will!”

Given the worst mass extinction in Europe since World War II, the Network of Action Committees for Safe Education A meeting was held at short notice on Tuesday to advance the fight for the closure of schools and to discuss prospects for a general strike against the policy of contamination.

“The situation has worsened enormously since our last meeting,” said Christoph Vandreier, Deputy Chairman of the Socialist Equality Party (SGP), right from the start. “In the meantime, almost 1,000 people die a day in Germany – and according to experts, this number will continue to rise and drive the health system into collapse, which in turn will lead to many more deaths. Already now, triage decisions have to be made at hospitals ”. The emergence of a mutation in the coronavirus, which according to initial reports is around 70 percent more contagious, according to Vandreier, is a deadly warning in this context.

“While thousands have died and 40 percent of the population has lost income, the champagne corks popped on the stock exchanges. This situation of hundreds of thousands of dead was brought about politically consciously. It is a result of the opening policy and was accepted in order to secure the profits. In fact, not a single business outside of the retail trade and hotels was closed. ”Vandreier concluded that there could be no question of a“ lockdown ”:

“All measures are aimed at keeping the factories open and the economy running while 1000 people die every day. And despite the increasing numbers and the mutation in Great Britain, there is already discussion that schools have to be opened as soon as possible. ”Even now daycare centers and many schools are not actually closed, but rather serve as“ custody facilities ”for children and parents can continue to be forced to work.

At the forefront of this policy are the SPD, the Greens and the Left Party, which are supported by the trade unions: “Just a few days before the so-called lockdown, the GEW spoke out against school closings and even ruled out alternate classes at primary schools.”

That is why the work of the action committees is of burning importance. “We have to prevent the schools from reopening in January – and we have to organize mass school strikes,” said Vandreier. “Companies, schools, daycare centers and local public transport are the main drivers of the pandemic and must be closed immediately. The non-vital production must be stopped and all workers must receive full wages. “
