“If the cases of variants go up, quarantine for those arriving from Great Britain. Close to Camilla’s family »- Corriere.it

Prime Minister Mario Draghi conducted a long press conference at the end of the G7 in Cornwall. Many topics were covered, from foreign policy to the vaccination campaign against Covid. Here are some of the positions expressed by the Prime Minister.

Fears of Delta variant cases in Britain

Faced with the increase in cases of coronavirus contagion in Great Britain – where the Delta or “Indian” variant is spreading especially among the unvaccinated and those vaccinated with a single dose – the prime minister said that “we swab anyone who enters Italy. If infections start to increase again, we too will have to reinsert the quarantine for those arriving from England: but we are not there yet ». On Monday, Boris Johnson could announce a postponement of the planned reopening, precisely because of what, according to some experts, is configured as a new peak of infections.

The death of Camilla Canepa

Draghi also spoke of the death of Camilla Canepa, the girl who disappeared in Genoa at the age of 18 due to a rare thrombosis that could be linked to vaccination, which took place with the AstraZeneca preparation during a vaccination “Open Day”. «I express my condolences and my participation to the girl’s mother and father: a very sad thing that should not have happened. This is the most important thing I have to say, ”he said. “Minister Speranza made his statements, explained how to deal with the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, so the situation is now clear on this. In all this – admits Draghi – it is very complicated to reconstruct responsibility: I think it is an evolving situation, so complicated ». Draghi recalls that “the open day initiative allowed many to be vaccinated immediately, but the recommendation of the Scientific Technical Committee to use AstraZeneca only for a certain age was already there”, specifies the premieri. Now, the premier concludes, “let’s try to carry out the vaccination campaign: it is not only our economic recovery that is in question, but also that of our social life ”.

The atmosphere of the G7

The heart of Draghi’s speech was dedicated to international issues. «The atmosphere of the G7 was positive but realistic – is his balance sheet at the end of the summit -. The dominant political theme was what attitude the G7 should have towards China and all autocracies in general, which use disinformation, social media, stop planes in flight, kidnap, kill, do not respect human rights, use forced labor. All these themes of resentment towards autocracies have been touched upon and shared. In this sense it was a realistic summit: there was happiness for the economy but the problems were not lost sight of ».

At dinner

Draghi then spoke explicitly of China. “It has a right,” he said, “to be a great economy, but the ways, such as coercive detentions, are at issue. It is an autocracy that does not adhere to multilateral rules and does not share the same worldview as democracies. We must be frank, cooperate but be frank about the things we do not share and do not accept ».

The interview with Biden

US President Joe Biden “He wanted to rebuild the traditional US alliances after the Trump period in which they were seriously flawed.” In particular, what changed was Biden’s attitude towards the European Union, of which the democratic president “is a great supporter”. On the China, “Silence is complicity,” Biden told Draghi. But in the course of the interview “the issue of Italy’s accession to the” was never mentioned Silk Road launched by China. “As for the specific act, we will examine it carefully.” With Biden there was also talk of Libya, and the need to respect the ceasefire to start reconstruction.

Climate commitments

There have been many climate commitments. “The figures are very large – Draghi recalled – the expenses amount to about 390 billion dollars a year, but 60 mial people die a year, and the contribution that inequalities make is incredible: 132 million people will be thrown into poverty in the next 10 years, and 9 of the ten countries most affected by climate change are low-income or middle-income countries. So the fight against climate change is also a question of equality, ”the premier underlined. Without denying that “of course there are non-aligned positions”: this is the case of those countries that express the will to finance the fight against climate change but continue to be large fossil producers. This is why a tax could be devised to adjust the difference in production costs to adapt them to the need to continue using cheaper fossil products.

The pillars of health

Regarding health, “we pointed out that there are three pillars: one made up of donations of vaccines and funding, and the vehicle that all of us should use is Covax, but also the elimination of the block on exports; the second point is to identify production sites also in developing countries; and this brings us directly to the last issue, of patent law: there is a proposal from the EU Commission that uses an international trade clause that seems to bring everyone closer ”.
