Identity confirmed: the body in the car was a suspected VW informant

A DNA analysis brings certainty: The body found in a burning car is the employee who is said to have secretly recorded explosive conversations at VW. Whether it is a suicide has not yet been conclusively clarified.

After the discovery of a corpse in a burning car in Rottorf (Helmstedt district) it is clear that it is the alleged in-house spy in the VW bugging affair. The DNA analysis showed that it was the owner of the vehicle, said public prosecutor Julia Meyer. As Meyer further said, there are many indications of a suicide, but this has not been conclusively clarified.

The Braunschweig public prosecutor announced at the beginning of August that it was investigating the circumstances of a possible arson attack on the man’s house. Accordingly, the building is said to have caught fire in a small town in May and was completely destroyed.

The wiretapping that was recently made public concerned confidential audio material from a VW working group. Before the group terminated all contracts with the supplier Prevent in March 2018, company representatives are said to have discussed future dealings with the company for a longer period of time. The former Volkswagen employee, now found dead, is said to have secretly recorded these conversations in 2017 and 2018 – the car manufacturer then filed a criminal complaint. Prevent, in turn, had no knowledge of the recordings, a spokesman for the group said.
