BDL unbeaten at home This evening is the last day of the regular season which will determine the opponent of Grenoble since Mulhouse, Amiens and Chamonix are in the fight for the still uncertain places 7 to 9. Mulhouse, fully equipped, therefore comes to the south with an objective of victory to secure him 7th place. Grenoble must do without Jalasvaara, Lamarche and Treille (suspended) but find Fleury. We should also witness a good duel between goalkeepers with Papillon, the best goalkeeper in the championship (92.8% saves) against Stepanek, goalkeeper conceding the fewest goals per game (2.1).

Fabre makes his speed speak from the 2nd minute but is a bit tight against the goalkeeper who deflects. On the other side Esipov notes in turn that Stepanek is present. But it doesn’t take long for Champagne to open the scoring, well present on the rebound left by Papillon on Aubin’s throw [1-0/3’51’’]. After a few timid Mulhouse forays into the offensive zone, Fleury and Deschamps wreak havoc in the Scorpions’ defense but Poukkula misses the finish. The first power play is whistled after 12′ of play. Grenoble circulates the puck well but Aubin or even Dechamps then Howden do not find the fault. Mulhouse is projecting well forward but the Isérois are faster and more aggressive on the carrier of the puck. At this little game Fleury is the smartest and recovers the puck to clean Papillon’s skylight at close range [2-0 14’52’’]. Raymond, generally flawless in his role as a defender, loses the puck to Stepanek who is surprised to see Rychagov shove it between his legs [2-1/15’45’’]. The game starts again, the trio Aubin-Champagne-F. Dair is not far from giving back the double advantage to his people just like Crinon on a big throw well controlled by Papillon. One minute before the siren, Pascal and Ten Braak engaged in a boxing fight and were each penalized by 5′, which was not a great loss for the two teams.

Mulhouse fits well in this second twenty where Rychagov sees his equalizing shot blocked by Stepanek. While a charge against a Mulhouse is not whistled, a similar is on a Grenoble. The reds and blues will be able to evolve in numerical superiority. The faults accumulate against Mulhouse, they must evolve 3’16 ” in double inferiority. But the Grenoble are unable to find the fault in this extremely favorable configuration, the defensive triangle is well in place and Papillon does the rest. In simple inferiority, Welsh goes against and is mowed down by Deschamps, indisputable penalty that will not be able to transform Rychagov who is masterfully stolen the puck by Stepanek. The complete return lasts only 20 seconds, Grenoble is in turn penalised. Mulhouse offers himself opportunities through Gegeris, Welsh and Orysiuk who note that Stepanek is the only Grenoble player at the level in this period. Mulhouse raised its collective level and Rousseau, Mugnier then Orysiuk still gave the Czech goalkeeper a hard time. The Grenoble residents miss this third and clearly waste the opportunity to bend the match during the long minutes of superiority, the unproductiveness of which is cause for concern.

The return from the locker room allows the locals to show better intentions with a throw from Fleury whose rebound does not benefit Deschamps. Grenoble is putting speed back into their game but the passes are struggling to follow one another with too much approximation. A new power play is granted to Grenoble which still does not succeed in this configuration. Even worse! Howden of the blue does not manage to control the puck that Mugnier embarks up to Stepanek … and throws aside. Grenoble gradually loses its coordination and lets Mulhouse come back into the game as the puck rattles Stepanek’s post. A new penalty against the Scorpions is welcome for Grenoble’s lack of inspiration but the special teams still can’t do it. Fleury shot on reception and in turn rang the bar. 2′ from the end Fabre makes his speed speak, sucks up the defender and serves Howden perfectly offset who misses the puck in front of an open cage. Mulhouse takes out his goalkeeper at 25” and settles in the offensive zone. Stepanek made the necessary stop on Gegeris’ shot, allowing the BDLs to pocket the 22nd victory at home. A lash from Stepanek at the siren, however, will taint his good evening performance.

The Grenoble team therefore remain undefeated at home, a feat never achieved since the move to 44 matches (Rouen had won the title without any defeat in the season but that was in 2006). However the team does not reassure all the more that they will face their opponents in the evening in the first round of the play-off. The attack on the one hand was not effective, especially in numerical superiority (with in particular 3’16 ” in unproductive double superiority), and which had already not scored against Angers in the previous match. Note the inefficiency of Howden, who does not convince in 16 matches with only 1 goal and 7 assists, like Poukkula who is not at his level last year. The defense remains solid with Stepanek who can make the difference despite some gaps to be corrected. The BDL are also irregular in their game and again this evening showed a drop in speed and control in the second third. Mulhouse posed a big problem for them tonight and could have won with more success. So beware of the Scorpions next week, the road to the semi-final could prove to be much more uncertain than expected.
