COLOGNE – After the fire of an ICE train at the Cologne / Bonn airport station, all platforms are reopened after a few hours of closure.
The restrictions were lifted around 1am on Friday morning, a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson said. According to the Cologne fire brigade, a control cabinet in the rear door area of the train had caught fire.
“The fire then spread to the train compartment. At that time, the ICE was already on the platform of the airport station,” the firefighters said.
The smoke spread very quickly, a spokesman for the fire department of the German news agency said. “The train was cleared through customs on time”. One person reportedly suffered from a light smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital.
Firefighters were alerted around 7pm on Thursday evening. At around 7.45pm, the emergency services reportedly kept the fire under control and then put it out. The train station was closed.
Flight operations were not affected in any way, an airport spokesperson said on request. The train station is located in the immediate vicinity of the airport. According to the Cologne fire brigade, about 60 people and 20 vehicles were employed, including the airport fire brigade and the federal police.
