The ICAO Council will be briefed on the status of the investigation on 13 September. If council members agree with this report, then it will be made public.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is a specialized agency of the United Nations, announced a report on the forced landing in Minsk of a Ryanair airline and the arrest of Belarusian opposition journalist and blogger Roman Protasevich, who was on board.

“ICAO will publish its findings on the forced landing of the Ryanair flight in Minsk and the arrest of Roman Protasevich in November. However, the interim results of the investigation may be presented in the coming weeks,” the statement says.

The ICAO noted that the council of the organization will be informed about the status of the investigation on September 13. If council members agree with this report, then it will be made public.

In August, the ICAO team visited Belarus to investigate the incident with the Ryanair flight

As the head of the ICAO group Sylvain Lefoer noted then, thanks to the preliminary work, he and his colleagues have already been able to draw up a “general picture of events.” “Now we need to clarify a number of facts, as well as collect additional information and materials”? – explained Lefoer the purpose of the group’s visit to Minsk.

Recall, May 23 Ryanair plane urgently landed in Minskflying from Athens to Vilnius. The liner sat down after the message about the mining of the aircraft, which later turned out to be false. At the same time, two passengers were detained in Minsk – Roman Protasevich and Sofia Sapega.

The Belarusian authorities charge Protasevich under three articles of the Criminal Code, including incitement of social hatred, organizing mass riots and organizing actions that grossly violate public order. Sapieha is suspected of inciting social discord and enmity and participation in riots.

The EU Council called on European air carriers to avoid flights over the territory of Belarus. June 5th EU imposed sanctions in relation to the state airlines of Belarus. They are prohibited from using EU airspace and airports.

Ukraine and Japan also closed their airspace for Belarusian airlines.
