Ian Wright thinks the Arsenal player was lucky after the Leeds controversy yesterday

Ian Wright told Match of the Day 2 on BBC One that Cedric Soares ‘prevented’ Patrick Bamford and Leeds should have had a penalty during their loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

There were a number of penalty yells during the match, two actually coming in favor of Bukayo Saka, one of which was later disallowed, but it was the one that Leeds didn’t get that caught Wright’s attention.

It was at 4-2 that Leeds felt they should have had a penalty because they thought Patrick Bamford was fouled while running into the penalty area.

Wright admitted that the Leeds star was “walled in” by the Arsenal players, as former Everton midfielder Leon Osman also claimed that if such a situation had occurred outside the area, a foul would have been committed.

“This was a shaky moment because you’re talking 4-3 and then you’re getting real Newcastle vibes in my head,” Wright said.

Once he’s finished, I think to myself, he [Cedric] has prevented you. That is going to be a foul outside the area. I thought they were going to give that.

“I think Leeds might feel bad about the fact that it was in a sandwich. But they didn’t give it.

Osman added: “I think he almost got away with it. Simply crossing and tucking your body. You’re right. The crazy thing is outside the penalty area, it would have been given as a foul. But not always within the penalty area ”.

After 47 minutes, it looked like the game was over as Arsenal were in cruise control and deserved their 4-0 lead.

But then Leeds, in their typical fashion, fought back and it looked like a comeback was at stake.

If that penalty was awarded then it would have been a very nervous finish for Arsenal, and perhaps you would have backed the Yorkshire team for fourth given their never-die attitude.

But it wasn’t meant to be that way, as the hosts did the damage early on.
