An employee named Park (36) recently made a reservation for a 140,000 won Christmas cake at a luxury hotel in Seoul. After seeing the end-of-year luxury hotel Christmas sweets sell out since early December, I kept an eye out for them this year and ordered them as soon as bookings started.

It’s a heavy price, but I’m throwing a house party because it’s expensive to spend the end of the year outside noisily. He said, ‘I was planning to spend the end of the year outside after the Corona 19 situation (new coronavirus infection) calmed down to some extent, but (Itaewon disaster) an atmosphere of mourning was formed, so I want this year to be difficult again I rushed to book despite the high price because I wanted to give a special gift to my family who will be spending Christmas at home.”

Luxury hotels are starting to accept bookings for Christmas cakes for 2022. Demand for luxury cakes is expected to increase as an atmosphere of concern builds for large crowds, and a little “Home Cooked Christmas”. Limited edition cakes for 5-star hotels are 2-3 times more expensive than regular bakeries, but the industry predicts that the demand for “little luxuries” (a phenomenon where happiness is pursued through petty luxuries) will increase .

Going in this week, major luxury hotels are taking bookings for limited-edition cakes aimed at the holiday season.

On the 25th, a month before Christmas, a 5-star hotel official said: “As soon as we start booking, the requests pour in. Some cakes should be fully booked in advance. Booking inquiries are already coming in to Shilla, Chosun Palace and Lotte Hotels, who have not yet started making bookings.

Although the price is not cheap in the first place, the price of Christmas sweets is on the rise this year. The Westin Chosun Seoul in Sogong-dong, Seoul, will set the price of the Christmas cake (Chosun Deli) between 85,000 and 140,000 won starting on the first of next month. Last year, the most expensive cake was 125,000 won, but it’s gone up even more. JW Marriott Hotel Dongdaemun Square Seoul presented a 180,000 won cake. Last year’s most expensive cake was 85,000 won, but the price has more than doubled.

The price of cakes is interpreted to have increased further as a result of the “milk inflation (milk + inflation)”, in which the price of raw milk has increased this year, and dairy companies are also increasing the price of milk. According to the industry, the Seoul Milk Cooperative has increased the price of dairy products by an average of 6% since 17%. The prices of fresh cream and butter have also increased by 10% and 7%, respectively. On the same day, Maeil Dairies and Namyang Dairies also increased the factory price of white milk (900ml) by an average of 8%.

In particular, consumers are curious to know how much the Chosun Palace Christmas cake will cost this year, which was the most expensive last year. Last year, the price of “White Tree Special Cake” sold in this hotel reached 250,000 won.

A freelancer named Yoon (33), who has booked a fancy cake at a hotel for Christmas for the third year, said, “If a fancy cake appears when you open the package, it can enhance the atmosphere of the party. . Since ‘Unboxing’, people who eat cake together are curious and upload it to SNS (social networking service), and people around them show a lot of interest, so it’s fun.”
