He had acquired it from the state Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft (DDSG) that had just gone under.
Luger, who was also at the helm of the excursion ship “Fitzcaraldo” for a long time, stayed true to the Danube afterwards – but no longer in Austria. He was drawn to Moldova, Ukraine and Romania on foot, where he lived for 20 years and, as he says to the OÖN, not only learned the Romanian language, but also helped the people there. “Their standard of living cannot be compared with ours,” Luger told OÖN. He therefore offered people free medical treatment and also produced the remedies for it himself.
After all, the now 62-year-old urgently needed help himself. He fell badly and suffered a pulmonary infarction from a thrombosis. His home was the savior in need – in the form of the Brothers of Mercy Hospital. Luger is currently recovering in a small apartment in his father’s house in Ottensheim.
As much as he appreciates life at home and states that “the Danube has never been so clear and clean, I would like to be active again soon. And in my work for the people.” This will not be the case in Austria as unconventional as Luger and his methods are.
