“I gave everything and I’m 13th”

Shining last month in Jerez, Fabio Quartararo was totally annoyed this Sunday as he commented on the third race of this month of August, a month that was from bad to worse for him. Difficult with his tires at Brno, he had the most problems with his brakes during the two Austrian races, which added to the unsatisfactory overall performance of the Yamaha at the Red Bull Ring. Conclusion: eighth place last weekend and only 13th today.

“Another race in Austria… Really not positive”, comments the French pilot. “We have to see what happened because all our weak points appeared on the bike. It was really strange because I honestly thought that the potential was higher, but I spent the whole race behind Aleix [Espargaró] and I could see that the bike was struggling in many areas where I didn’t think so. Aside from the problem with the brakes, we’ve had a lot of others and the first is top speed. “

“The performance is very poor. Already, we lack a lot of acceleration, but also performance at a standstill and I had a lot of brake problems during these two weeks”, he admits. A worrying finding on a track that imposes such heavy braking and while another driver of the group, Maverick Viñales, simply had to jump off his machine at more than 200 km / h having lost his brakes when approaching one of the dry bends of the Austrian track.

Fabio Quartararo, himself, has experienced alerts in rehearsals, including warm-ups. “Once I lost the brakes and another time it was my fault”, he specifies. “When we have already lost the brakes and when racing we feel that it is slackening, we have an adjustment to lengthen the grip, but in the race I was at the maximum and it released every time. at a time when I was close to losing them. It was dangerous and I was not confident. “

Races too irregular to play for the title

Under threat from Andrea Dovizioso at championship, Fabio Quartararo finally retained the lead this Sunday by taking advantage of the concerns also encountered by the Ducati rider, only his margin of three points leaves him rather perplexed for the moment. Even the prospect of going now to Misano, to compete in two races there too, is not enough to give him back a smile: according to him, the trigger must come from the mechanics and not from the track.

“We have to see the positive, which is that we are going to do two races in Misano, on a track which is, I think, much better for us. […] But the problem will still be there, so we will have to cover it and do our best “, he emphasizes.

“I gave my all in all conditions and today giving my all I’m 13th. Misano will be a better track for us, but Yamaha has to work hard to fix the problem and fix what they have been asked to do. the next race. I really hope we get that for Misano, because it’s not just me. Of course, Valentino [Rossi] started much better than me, he was better, but we are in trouble, we all are. It’s not easy to be in this situation. “

“Of course we are contenders for the title but I don’t feel as confident as in Jerez because there everything was going very well. We seem to have more problems every time. Here it was a very difficult track for us. us, whereas last year I had very good feelings and I finished third. It was very different from the feelings of last year. We hope to have important things for Misano. “

Silent as to the nature of these requests, Quartararo can only repeat that he “hope to have a positive response for Misano” and that he hopes that Yamaha can simply go in the direction he wants, and this in a context of difficulties related to the engine which pushed the engineers to lower the revs of the M1.

As for weakness in the valves, identified following the alerts that affected three of the four drivers in the group during the first races of the championship, we now know that it will not be corrected but bypassed by rotating the blocks in order to avoid endangering the races.

“If Yamaha says that we will continue with this engine, I hope they are confident and that they will try to improve our situation”, Quartararo replies on this point. “We will see how it goes in the next races but we had too many difficulties with the bike during these two weeks. It is impossible to fight for the title with problems like this and really irregular races.”
