#I am | Gabriel Sánchez Viveros experiences art without labels – El Sol de México

Gabriel Sánchez Viveros is an artist who has more than 60 architectural works, including interior design, architectural design and application of art in spaces in which an eclectic style with clear Mexican touches predominates.

His work has led him to be present in countries such as the United States, China, Spain, Germany, India and Saudi Arabia, working in the latter country for 15 years in the construction of more than 15 palaces for the royal family, where he also carried out other art, architecture and interior design projects.

“I got there because they liked my work, the way I create concepts and how I develop them,” he says in an interview with The Sun of Mexico. “At first I was going to do only a 6-month project, but I stayed for 15 years, it was a wonderful experience, full of challenges, satisfaction and growth,” he recalls.

Transdisciplinary artist

But his work as an artist is not limited to architecture, but rather extends to performance, painting, photography and sculpture, which is why the graduate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico defines himself as a transdisciplinary artist.

“I have always been creative and art is part of my life; in recent years I have focused on my career as a visual artist, because now I feel the need to create in mediums such as painting, photography and alternative media”.

For him there is no division between one discipline and another, rather they are all part of his artistic work, which is why he considers that the passage from one art to another has taken place organically.

“I never thought of dedicating myself to just one thing, I am a creative being who investigates, who makes art, design, architecture; my life is surrounded by stimuli and inspiration and I decide to express them in what I consider congruent at each moment”.

More than highlighting a professional achievement, Gabriel sees his activity as an achievement in itself:

“For me it is an achievement to have the ability to create and communicate through the design of spaces; each work I have done is a valuable achievement, not only for me, but for all those involved in its development and construction”, he assures.

Passionate about creativity and art, he considers that his artistic language has evolved over the years.

And with that passion he speaks about each of his works, as in the case of “Magma”, a work that, according to him, “represents the strength of the power of the interior breaking down barriers and letting out the light… Everything you do in life and everything you fight for, will open gaps or make cracks that will let out the light “.

His works also stand out, such as “Between the lines”, a photographic series in which he explores the relationship between the Eastern world and its clashes with the West, and “Primitive”, a series of body paintings that become an installation in which he reflects on the first time that man was aware of himself.

Derived from his life experience, Gabriel’s visual work takes elements from his daily life, colors, symbols and materials to transform them into living objects that communicate with us.

As a visual artist, her work has been highlighted in forums such as the José Guadalupe Posada Engraving Biennial (2015), and currently at the Beijing International Art Biennial and the Tijuana I. International Pictorial Triennial, at the CECUT in that city. border.

Another of his works that caught our attention was one entitled “The Origin”, in which he worked with the premise of “destroying to build” and about which he comments:

“It is an idea that comes from architecture, I believe that even if the perfect piece breaks, as it could happen to you as a human being, you can mend yourself and become an extraordinary and unique piece again.”

INTERVENED COVERS

About “La Mole” -piece that can be seen on the cover of this supplement- he explains:

“It is a fabric mask intervened with pieces of ostrich eggshell, crimped with brass wire… It is a protection derived from the life experience that we have had as humanity with what this pandemic has been; the mask becomes a protection that is the same as the breastplate of La Mole from Ron Wilson’s fantastic 4 (the man of stone)… I have a complete series of intervened masks with different materials and motifs”.

Another theme that stands out in his work is that of migrants, a topic that he considers close for various reasons:

“It is a subject that has always interested me. Due to my life experience, I have traveled a lot and for more than 15 years I lived migrating firsthand. When I lived in Saudi Arabia I had direct contact with people of various nationalities; I had emigrated with work documents and with the privileges that it offered me, but it was hard to live in a different country, with a different culture from mine, far from my family and friends, motivated to fulfill my dreams… But to my surprise , I came across less fortunate stories and since then it has become a topic of interest to me, what could I do to help in such a situation?”, he reflects.

And it is that, as he himself says, his condition as an artist makes him a very sensitive person to his environment.

“In order to be able to approach the issue better and in a more respectful way, I decided to take the diploma course on “Migration and protection of refugees” taught by MIDES DH and the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana. From the research we generated, I realized that art is a powerful tool for transformation because it is a call to consciousness, and that is how I decided to talk about it, trying to promote empathy and sensitivity towards migration, because I am sure that with empathy everything could be better”.

It was precisely a job related to migration, one of the ones that has given him the most satisfaction, due to the feedback he received:

“Once a curator was reviewing my work and saw my series “ROT, the path of a migrant”… I remember how his interpretation marked me and helped me take an unexpected turn in my work, I realized that it was a theme that was emerging first in my work and then in my consciousness. Thanks to your comments I then started my series “Path to the border”.

The artist is currently working on a work entitled “Flora’s Soul” in which he investigates and experiments with floral pigments on handmade paper and in which he addresses themes such as family, union, love, ties and life cycles. .

So, who is Gabriel Sánchez Viveros? “I am an exceptional and unique human being, full of dreams and challenges, who likes to investigate and live with passion”.

Undoubtedly, a full and satisfied artist with his ability to communicate and connect with the viewer, dedicated to his work of creating reflections and arousing feelings, because as he says: “For any artist the greatest achievement is having the opportunity to witness how his work lives through the eyes of the other”.

He has no idols or role models in the world of art, but he admits that nature inspires him and that contemplation is something that gives him peace and motivates him to create day by day, since he is a believer that in nature there is perfection.

Before concluding, Gabriel invites people to live without labels, to develop their potential through their talents and to live with love and respect, “to be the best version of the unique being that we are, for our good and that of humanity.” ”.
