Hyundai’s hydrogen truck makes its debut in Europe

This is the world’s first mass-produced fuel cell electric truck, Hyundai has delivered the first models to customers in Switzerland, 50 will be on the country’s roads this year.

The delivery of XCIENT Fuel Cell marks the official entrance Hyundai commercial vehicles in the European market, which are important for the company’s expansion into the North American and Chinese commercial markets. The production capacity of the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell truck will reach the 2,000 units per year by 2021 to support its expansion into Europe, the United States and China. The increase in capacity will be supported by an investment of $ 1.3 billion.

In the United States, Hyundai is partnering with logistics leaders to supply mass-produced heavy fuel cell trucks. The House is collaborating with companies for build a hydrogen value chain complete covering everything from hydrogen production and charging stations to service and maintenance. By 2030, Hyundai expects more than 12,000 fuel cell trucks to hit U.S. roads.

Hyundai is also working in China, where it aims to get 1 million hydrogen vehicles on the roads by 2030. For the launch in China Three fuel cell electric trucks are planned, one medium-sized in 2022, one heavy in a couple of years and another strategically designed for the Chinese market.

A key to Hyundai’s global expansion of fuel cell trucks will be the successful launch of XCIENT Fuel Cell in Europe. The seven customers who received the first batch will transport payloads of consumer goods throughout Switzerland, emitting only clean water vapor.

Hyundai will introduce a new XCIENT Fuel Cell model over the next few years, featuring an electric axle and two 200 kW fuel cell systems. The new model range will include 4 × 2 and 6 × 2 cargo trucks and 4 × 2 tractors capable of covering a significant part of the main European heavy truck market. These models will contribute to the effort of replace diesel trucks that emit pollutants. Hyundai has been dedicated to further developing fuel cell technology and establishing the supply chain to realize a hydrogen economy for a better and cleaner future.
