– Hyundai Motor Company[005380]Following fires one after another in Kona Electric Vehicles (EV), a fire broke out this time in an electric city bus made by Hyundai Motor Company.

Hyundai Motor Co.’s electric bus powered by battery cell from LG Energy Solution caught fire in South Korea following several fire incidents involving its Kona EV models that have been recalled by the company for probe.

According to industry sources on the 16th, the electric city bus that caught fire while running on the road in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, was manufactured by Hyundai Motors in 2019. Confirmed. The bus was burned down in a fire, but fortunately, there were no passengers on the bus at the time, so there was no human injury. It is known that the fired bus is equipped with LG Chem batteries such as Hyundai Motor Company’s Kona EV, which has recently implemented global recall measures due to a series of fires.

The Elec City bus made in 2019 went up in flames while cruising on the road in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province. The fire started from the roof where a battery cell is installed, according to sources. No casualty has been reported since no passengers were aboard. The bus was on its way back to garage after receiving battery-related repairs, sources found. It is installed with the same LG Energy Solution battery as the Kona EV cars that the company recalled for fire issue.

Hyundai Motor Company, the Automobile Safety Research Institute, and the fire department will work together to investigate the cause of the fire, including maintenance details and battery defects. An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, “In relation to the electric bus fire, we ordered an investigation to the Korea Automobile Safety Research Institute.”

Hyundai Motor, the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute (TS) and local fire agency will jointly conduct investigation to find out the cause of the fire. An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it commissioned a probe to the TS to see if the fire was caused inside or outside of the battery cell, and plans to ask for help from National Forensic Service if necessary.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Automobile Research Institute will also look into whether there is a connection with the ongoing Kona EV fire. In the industry, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport expects to announce the results of the Kona EV fire cause investigation sooner or later. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it was initially confirmed that a fire could occur due to poor battery cell manufacturing of high voltage batteries, but battery maker LG Energy Solutions has denied possible manufacturing defects.

Industry watchers believe the transport ministry will soon announce its investigation results on the cause of the fire on Kona EV. The ministry speculated the fire was caused by flawed battery cell but the manufacturer, LG Energy Solution, has been denying the accusation.
