Hyundai unveils new Ioniq 6 electric sedan, the brand’s second zero-emission model

The Hyundai Koreans have unveiled the first official photos and information about the new Ioniq 6 electric sedan. The manufacturer has only released details on the design of the second zero-emission model in the Ioniq range. The technical specifications will be revealed on July 14.

It is currently known that the new Ioniq 6 will cost less than the future rival Tesla Model 3. This means a starting price of less than 45,000 euros for the entry-level version with rear-wheel drive.

The unveiling of the model and the start of production were delayed by about three months. The reason was that some exterior and interior details were changed at the express request of CEO Chung Eui-sun.

The Koreans have not provided many details yet, but we know that the car is built on the E-GMP platform. It is the same architecture used by Ioniq 5 and KIA EV6.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 6 was foreshadowed by the Prophecy concept, introduced two years ago. Aesthetically, the new Ioniq 6 does not differ much from it, but it brings with it Porsche models, especially at the rear. Also here is the aileron under the rear window, and under it another discreet ducktail type, which integrates into the body.

Also distinguished are the bright details of the front and rear Parametrix Pixel, the doors with hidden handles and the digital exterior mirrors. The latter will only be available in markets where they are accepted by law.

The exterior is complemented by large asymmetrical design rims, which are probably 19 or 20 inches. Hyundai engineers also focused on aerodynamics, a chapter in which the Ioniq 6 is excellent. Cx coefficient is only 0.21.

There is no information about the interior yet. But, in the published images you can see two 12-inch displays, one for the instrument panel and the other for the infotainment system.

We also find a multifunctional steering wheel with two spokes and a 64-color ambient light system. For example, the US version will have conventional rear-view mirrors, so there will be no dedicated monitors at the ends of the dashboard.

The new Ioniq 6 will offer around 300 hp

From a technical point of view, the new Ioniq 6 will offer versions with one and two electric motors. The latter will provide around 300 hp and all-wheel drive. The package will also include a 77.4 kWh battery. The E-GMP EV architecture has an 800-volt charging infrastructure.

In terms of size, the model measures 4.86 meters in length, 1.88 meters in width and 1.5 meters in height. These dimensions are similar to those of other electric sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz EQE, Porsche Taycan and Audi e-Tron GT.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 6 will make its commercial debut in the US in the first half of 2023. Subsequently, the Korean electric model will arrive in Europe.

The Asian company will invest $ 5.5 billion in building the first dedicated electric vehicle plant. It will be built near the city of Savannah (Georgia, USA) and will produce up to six electric models for the North American market by 2028. These include the future Ioniq 7, which will debut in 2024, and a pick-up KIA, which will go on sale in the first half of 2026.
