Hyperion XP1: the power of hydrogen

LOOKS AHEAD – If there are those, like Gordon Murray, who see a modern hypercar still as a rather traditional car (who to find out more), most of the new proposals in this rarefied sector look much further ahead. This is the case of the Hyperion XP1 in fact, it is the first electric hypercar powered by hydrogen, an energy vector that until now has been proposed almost exclusively for heavy road transport.

THE PERFORMANCES ARE THERE – Made by the Californian startup Hyperion Motors, the XP1, whose intention is to put it into production starting from 2022, was to be launched at the New York Motor Show, canceled due to the pandemic. However, the house has released a series of images that give a rather precise idea of the car’s shapes. The technical specifications, announced only partially, say that the XP1 is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km / h in about 2.2 seconds and reaching the maximum speed of 354 km / h.

GREAT AUTONOMY – To power the electric motors of the Hyperion XP1 we find a complex system where the fuel cell is able to generate current thanks to the chemical reaction between hydrogen, stored liquid in a high pressure tank, and oxygen. The autonomy declared by the American company is 1,600 km.

IT LOOKS LIKE THE CHIRON – Aesthetically the Hyperion XP1 certainly does not go unnoticed with the shapes of the body, designed by aerospace engineers expert in materials, reminiscent of those of the Bugatti Chiron. To keep the weight down, which is equal to 1,248 kg, without losing sight of the resistance, the monocoque frame is made of titanium and carbon fiber. It should also be emphasized the presence of solar panels that cover the entire roof and two exhaust terminals which, however, unlike those present on endothermic cars, emit only water vapor produced by the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.
