Hydration Multipliers: Helpful or Hype?
Electrolyte-infused drinks gain popularity amidst rising temperatures.
As temperatures climb, staying hydrated becomes critical, prompting some to reach for hydration multipliers. But are these products truly necessary? Experts weigh in on their benefits and potential drawbacks.
The Role of Electrolytes
While “plain water is still the gold standard for hydration,”
according to Dr. Shannon Dowler, a family physician, electrolyte supplements can be beneficial during intense physical activity. These supplements replenish electrolytes lost through sweat, similar to sports drinks, explained Dr. Scott Braunstein, chief medical officer at Sollis Health.
According to the National Institutes of Health, electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium are vital for numerous bodily functions, including nerve and muscle function (NIH 2022).
“When we sweat, we lose more than just fluids, we also lose electrolytes — mostly sodium and chloride, but also smaller amounts of potassium, calcium, and magnesium,”
Braunstein noted. Replenishing these electrolytes can be achieved through electrolyte-containing fluids, especially when a full meal isn’t ideal.
Considerations Before Consuming
Experts recommend carefully reviewing product labels, paying close attention to sugar, sodium, and caffeine content. “Some electrolyte products contain large amounts of sugar, which can be problematic for those with diabetes, obesity and other health conditions,”
Braunstein cautioned.
Furthermore, caffeine, present in some formulations, can act as a diuretic, potentially hindering effective rehydration.
Who Should Be Cautious?
Individuals with chronic conditions, particularly kidney disease, high or low blood pressure, or heart disease, should seek medical advice before using these products. “Those with certain chronic conditions…should consult their doctor before consuming these products, as maintaining fluids and electrolytes within a specific range may be critical for their health,”
added Braunstein.
