LINCOLN, Neb. – Teh Nebraska volleyball team continued its dominant form, capping off a weekend of elite competition with a strong showing in front of record crowds. Over three days, more than 41,000 fans attended six matches, demonstrating the growing popularity of the program and the sport.
A key adjustment in the back row has bolstered the Huskers‘ defense. Lexi Mauch has transitioned to the back right position, while Chloe Choboy has moved to the conventional libero spot in back left. Head coach John Cook praised their performance, highlighting their work ethic, interaction, and hustle as instrumental to the team’s success.
“It’s unbelievable how good they are together, and when we talk about smothering teams, they’re leading the charge,” Cook said. “Our out-of-system setting was much improved from Friday. There are so many things that we need to continue to get better at, and they are leading that charge.”
The enthusiastic support extended beyond the typical fanbase. Cook recounted an encounter before the match with a family who had traveled from Colombia specifically to see the team play, requesting a photograph.
This level of support represents a meaningful evolution from Cook’s own playing days. Reflecting on the past, she contrasted the current atmosphere with games played at the NU Coliseum, where crowds of 4,000-plus were considered large. She acknowledged the importance of not taking the current level of support for granted, particularly for volleyball and women’s sports in Nebraska.
“What Nebraska does obviously sets the bar, and this weekend showed it,” Cook said. “We’re becoming a worldwide brand.”
