Hurry up for 20 euros to go up: the Eiffel Tower is about to be repainted

The 300-330-meter-high Eiffel Tower in Paris is rusty and in need of major repairs, but instead, in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games scheduled in the French capital, the tower is being given a cosmetic coat of paint for 60 million euros, reports the French magazine “Marianne”.

Gustave Eiffel’s architectural masterpiece was built over two years and opened on March 31, 1889, in honor of the World’s Fair and the centenary of the Great French Revolution. About six million tourists visit it every year.

However, according to experts, the tower is in a bad condition and is covered with rust, referring to confidential expert reports, “Marianne” reports.

“Everything is simple, if Gustav Eiffel visited this place, he would have a heart attack,” one of the tower’s managers told the magazine.

SETE, which owns the Eiffel Tower, did not immediately comment on the Marianne article.

Currently, a new coat of paint is being applied to the tower for 60 million euros, preparing Paris for the Olympic Games in 2024. This is the 20th time the tower has been repainted.

About 30% of the tower was supposed to be cleaned and then two new coats of paint applied, but work delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the presence of lead in the old paint mean that only 5% of the tower will be treated, Marianne reports.

SETE is reluctant to close the tower for long periods of time because of the loss of tourist revenue, the magazine adds.
