Hungarian Prime Minister calls for ceasefire and peace negotiations in Ukraine

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban on air radio Kossuth stated that the country’s authorities “consider it necessary to prevent the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army.”

He called the conduct of the counter-offensive “a bloodbath”.

Orban hid behind the fact that “the attacking side suffers greater losses than the defending side,” adding that “Kyiv may lose more military than Moscow.”

“Before the Ukrainians start a counterattack, we must do everything in our power to achieve a ceasefire and start peace negotiations,” he concluded.

LIGA.net asked the speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oleg Nikolenko for a comment. He said he would comment “a little later.”

Earlier, on May 23, Orban said that Ukraine “cannot win the war.”

  • On January 26, 2023, the head of the Hungarian government compared Ukraine to Afghanistan and called it “no man’s land”. The Foreign Ministry summoned the Hungarian ambassador “for a frank conversation.”
  • On February 24, the Hungarian prime minister warned the world not to “drive Moscow into a corner” on the issue of war. In his opinion, Russia cannot win on the battlefield in Ukraine, but this could lead to a nuclear war.
  • On March 31, Orban said that the leaders of the EU countries could allegedly send some “peacekeeping forces” to Ukraine.
