Hundreds of dead turtles found on Mexican beach | Abroad

The turtles washed ashore were all females of the Olive Ridley species. That turtle is one of the smallest sea turtles in the world with a length of about 70 centimeters. It’s likely they were on their way to the beach to lay eggs, according to the Mexican Turtle Center. The breeding ground in southern Mexico is a protected area.

An investigation is underway as to what caused the turtles to die. According to the first results, the cause is not a disease but human action. Researchers think the turtles may have become entangled in fishing nets.
