Hundreds of Corpses Resurface in India’s Ganges River

New Delhi

Hundreds of bodies were found floating in the Ganges River, India. Seasonal flooding in the Ganges River is thought to have caused shallow graves to erode and reveal the bodies.

As reported by AFP, Sunday (27/6/2021), the edge area the river Ganges Previously it was also the location of graves for bodies in India that were allegedly intentionally dumped because crematoriums were overwhelmed due to the spike in COVID-19 deaths.

An official in the northern city of Allahabad, Neeraj Kumar Singh, said that nearly 150 bodies had to be cremated in the last three weeks. It is even estimated that there are 500-600 bodies buried in that location.

“We are not exhuming bodies but only bodies floating due to rising water levels being cremated,” he said.

“The area is spread over a kilometer (half a mile) and we estimate there are about 500-600 bodies buried,” Singh told AFP.

Most of the bodies found are believed to have been victims of COVID-19 in April and May, when India was hit by a spike in cases or because families couldn’t afford firewood for traditional Hindu cremations and the bodies were buried in the Ganges River.

Due to the annual rainy season, the area is now washed away by floods. The sand that buried the bodies was washed away and exposed the bodies.

The number of shallow graves such as those found in the Ganges raises suspicion from various parties. It is suspected that the total death toll in India from the pandemic may be more than a million, several times the official figure of nearly 400,000.
