Hundreds of activists raise their voice for climate in biggest protest of COP27

Hundreds of activists demonstrated this Saturday at the venue of the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh demand an end to the use of fossil fuels and that Western countries pay for the damage caused by climate change.

It was the largest protest to take place at this year’s climate conference.

“We will continue to demand dramatic emissions cuts and climate reparations from the countries historically responsible for our destruction, especially for losses and damages, but also for adaptation and mitigation.”said a Filipino climate activist.

“We want something done. We don’t want distractions, we don’t want shows, we want climate action and we want climate justice. So as we march, let’s make our voices heard.”said Joseph Mithika Mwenda, an activist with the Pan-African Alliance for Climate Justice.

There have been climate marches in several European cities. In MadridGreenpeace has taken the lead in calling for an end to fossil fuels.

Protests against lignite mining in Germany

About 2,200 environmental activists protested the planned demolition of the city of Lutzerath (West) to proceed with the exploitation of an open pit lignite mine in the North Rhine-Westphalia region.

The demonstrators demanded that the agreement reached between the local authorities and the energy consortium, authorized by both the regional and federal governments, which will lead to the disappearance of this municipality, be reconsidered.
