HUK-Coburg aids in the transition to electric transport.

There are many unanswered questions for consumers when getting started with electromobility, because it is about more than just the new vehicle. Not only car dealerships can help with the switch from combustion engines to electric vehicles, digital platforms also provide answers, such as HUK-Coburg’s e-mobility advice on the website emob.huk-mobilitaet.de. Consumers can enter their individual needs there, such as the daily driving distance, and then receive offers from the right electric car to the wall box or the best charging tariff.

According to a recent survey by the Fraunhofer Institute, around 60 percent of drivers of electric cars charge their vehicles at home. Basically, a wall box should be used, because the socket is not only slower, but can also be dangerous in case of doubt, because older electrical installations are not designed for permanent high-performance operation. Overloading can quickly lead to a fire. Since most vehicles only have a maximum charging capacity of eleven kilowatts, the standard wall box with a charging capacity of up to eleven kilowatts is completely sufficient. The additional power that some connections have with up to 22 kilowatts does not bring any real advantage. If you have a photovoltaic system on the roof at home, you should also pay attention to the option of digitally connecting the wall box, for example via an app.

Public charging stations come into play when the living situation is not suitable for installing a wall box. That’s what around 26 percent of e-drivers do. There is no way around it, even on longer journeys. But which tariff is cheap? Billing is usually based on kilowatt hours. The prices vary greatly from provider to provider and are between around 35 and up to a good 80 cents per kilowatt hour. For comparison: Household electricity costs an average of 40 cents per kilowatt hour in Germany. For frequent chargers, tariffs with a basic fee are usually cheaper at public charging stations. Depending on the model, up to 20 cents can be saved per kilowatt hour. Regional charging station operators often have an attractive tariff. It’s worth taking a closer look here. The HUK mobility platform helps here too. If necessary, a registration service for the new acquisition can also be arranged via the site. Changing the owner and re-registering your own vehicle can also be done online. The required documents, and if desired also the new number plate, are then sent home by post. (awm)
