What has long been common practice in Austria’s football stadiums was tried for the first time on Saturday in Germany’s second division: that fans checked and registered in advance ignite pyrotechnics.

The action before the game between Hamburger SV and Karlsruher SC (2-0) was a test run – and went without incident. Later ÖFB team player Lukas Hinterseer scored both goals to lead the table.

Ten HSV fans from the ultra camp had lit ten smoke pots three minutes before the game in the area between the Hamburg North Stand and the gate. A specialist company and stewards oversaw the action. Fire extinguishers were ready for emergencies. The DFB and the city authorities had approved the action. The police union had described it as “blue-eyed and very risky”.

For many football fans, pyrotechnics are part of fan culture. That’s why they don’t want to do without it. So far there have been penalties for burning down in Germany. Controlling the burning of fireworks outside the audience area could be a compromise.

In Austria, pyrotechnics are generally prohibited at sporting events. However, there are exceptions that are limited in time or to certain areas in the stadium. A distinction is therefore made between legal, i.e. controlled and monitored, and illegal pyro-actions.
