Plague of the summer, the mosquitoes annoy our nights by turning us around during hours in order to drink of our blood. Not content with buzzing close to our ears and preventing us from sleeping, they end up stinging us irreparably leaving on our skin itchy bites.
The cause: histamine, a substance secreted by our body as an immune response to the injection of saliva from the mosquito, and which produces this intense itching sensation. Fortunately, there are solutions to relieve itching in the long term.
Cold
Among these, cold is an ally against itching. In the event of an itchy bite, you can apply a cold water compress or an ice cube to it.
The hot
Conversely, it is also quite possible to apply a hot water compress, a tea bag used, or even, if you are adventurous, to bring the lit cigarette closer to the bite. Be careful not to touch the skin, at the risk of burning yourself.
Essential oils
Certain essential oils with anti-inflammatory and soothing properties are particularly effective against the itching linked to mosquito bites. This is the case with oils of lavender aspic, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, chamomile and cloves. One to two drops on a compress then placed on the bite is generally enough to soothe the itching. Be careful, however, not to use them pure on toddlers. They are also prohibited in pregnant women.
Vinegar and baking soda
A real grandmother’s remedy, vinegar remains a safe choice to relieve itching. You can use white or cider vinegar, pure or diluted, on a compress to apply on the mosquito bite.
Another tip from our grandmothers: baking soda, to be diluted in water (about 3 tablespoons in 100 ml of water), then applied to the affected area using a compress.
The banana
Don’t throw your banana peels away! They can be useful in reducing itching. On clean skin, apply the skin side flesh for five to ten minutes.
Menthol and aloe vera
Known for their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, menthol andaloe vera can be safely applied to mosquito bites.
