Participants in Apple’s beta program can now test a highly anticipated feature of iOS 14: the infamous hidden album. This is a dependency of the Photos application, which allows you to hide sensitive photos in the event of an unexpected intrusion. To access this stash, go to Settings and locate “Photos”. There you will find an option “Hidden Album”Which you will need to activate to benefit from this functionality.

Once this formality is settled, all you have to do is select a photo and then select the new option “Hide”.

iOS will simply ask you to confirm that you want to hide the photo, specifying that it will no longer appear in your photo library.

To access it, simply go to the Albums tab in the Photos app. It will appear in a subcategory named “Other Albums”, where you will find an album “Masked”. All you have to do is go there to find your most secret pictures.

A file barely hidden, and not protected

This feature was requested by many users ofiPhone, and has been for some time. But as it stands, this is an additional album without any real interest. Indeed, contrary to what its name suggests, this album is not really hidden. It is simply moved to a slightly less accessible location, since its content is no longer accessible through the photo library. Hidden Album therefore suffers from the comparison with a slew of similarly functioning applications … but which allow the case to be completely camouflaged, or at least to protect it.

If Apple plans to keep this system, it would be interesting to be able to completely hide the file in question. The minimum union would be simple password protection, but the ideal would certainly be Touch ID fingerprint lock or Face ID. This would instantly turn the system into a small safe, which would give it some very real interest. In the professional context, it could be used to protect sensitive documents. In the private context, it would serve more to protect your little personal secrets. We will certainly know more when the final version of iOS 14 is released this fall.
