How the glarus from the symbol of Burgas became his enemy

– The Black Sea city was the first in the country to fight against the insolent birds, which have significantly increased in recent years

– They mix in the garbage cans, eat the food of stray cats

– Only the Minister of Ecology can decide how to limit their population

– However, there are also voices to let nature do its job

From the emblem of Burgas in recent years, the glarus has become an enemy of the city. Citizens are increasingly complaining about insolent birds storming their pets from the air and the dirt they leave behind looking for food in rubbish bins.

Their number has increased so much that it has come so far as the municipal council to take urgent measures. For now, this sounds like a wish, as it is unclear exactly how Burgas will fight against the yellow-billed intruders.

A working group will be set up to identify the measures, one of which is

to break their eggs on the roofs,

but who will climb to look for them is unknown.

At the same time, it turned out that the battle may not take place, as a European directive requires to limit the population to prove scientifically that glares are really dangerous to humans and animal species around them.

From social networks, citizens have already announced that if the war with the Glarus does not work, they will organize in volunteer groups to shake them.

“It is intolerable. They eat everything from bread to live pigeons,

and the children are witnessing the ugly scenes with blood and spit live meat, ”mothers and fathers resent the gardens and parks in the seaside town. Recently, a man from Burgas shook the net by posting a video of birds eating a live hedgehog in front of his eyes.

According to the ecologist Petar Yankov from the Bulgarian Association for the Protection of Birds, the most important thing in limiting the population of the Glarus is to cut off their access to food.

“We humans are to blame for the increased population of these birds. On the one hand, it is the scattering of food, and on the other – the redevelopment, which provides large areas of glarus to nest, “says Yankov.

Experts are adamant that the power supply circuit must be interrupted. One of the reasons it exists is stray cats. Citizens of Burgas graciously feed the meowers with all kinds of food, which is often used by the Glarus. And the cat population in Burgas has increased dramatically in recent years, due to the fact that the city has dealt with stray dogs, which were their biggest enemy. More cats means more glares, environmentalists conclude.

According to them, in addition to inconveniences for the people of Burgas, the increased population of Glarus also affects the ecosystem.

“These birds behave like predators against other species of birds and mammals, and attack animals of endangered species listed in the Red Book. Glarus is chasing them not for fun, but to kill and eat them “, commented Petar Yankov.

Often their victims are wild pigeons, which are torn in front of people, and do not forgive small kittens.

As they dig through garbage dumps, garbage cans and land on balconies, they are

dangerous for the transmission of infectious diseases,

which is the other reason for the battle against the insolent bird. It is no coincidence that in many public places in the city the municipality has placed closed containers, and some have been dug into the ground – except for aesthetic and health reasons.

However, there are also citizens of Burgas who are against the designation of Glarus as their enemy.

“He is one of the symbols of Burgas, not of Yambol. Glarus is associated with the sea. There are not only harms, there are also benefits. Recently, there has been a large population of pigeons that land on balconies, roofs and public places and also pollute, and the glarus is their enemy. Let’s let nature do its job “, says the amateur ornithologist Svetlan Kirilov.

Some municipal councilors are of a different opinion.

“Glarus is not a protected species

and its population is not monitored. Its lifespan is 25-30 years and multiplies every year. There is no natural enemy. It is omnivorous – the range of foods it ingests is quite wide and covers from small animals, plants to waste “, explained the submitter of the proposal to reduce the population of Glarus municipal councilor Stoyan Grozev.

The method that the glarus adopts is of predation and this motivates us for the report. There are not a few cases of attacks on residents and tourists while trying to get food. Glaruses are a problem in many countries, “he added.

Despite incitement and ridicule over the report, the local parliament adopted it by a large majority, and Burgas became the first city in the country to officially fight the Glarus. However, the Minister of Ecology will have the final say.

“We treat the issue with understanding and seriousness, but we are afraid that under the current legislation the municipal council and the municipal administration do not have the authority to act. Only the Minister of Environment and Water has authority. Therefore, we will include representatives of the municipality in this working group in order to make a qualitative analysis on the basis of which a decision will be made by the MoEW. This initiative will start from Burgas, which will have an impact on the entire Southern Black Sea coast, “said Mayor Dimitar Nikolov.

In addition to a representative of the mayor’s office and municipal councilors, the working group will include ornithologists and representatives of the RIEW. It will act temporarily until the problem is solved, and the municipality will finance it with money from the administration.

Whether it will work, time will tell. However, one glarus will certainly remain in Burgas – the one from the monument of the Burgas zevzek Petyo Pandira at the entrance of the bridge in the Sea Garden. For 7 years the bronze sculpture has adorned the approach to it. In his hand the legendary citizen of Burgas holds the unchanging glarus – a symbol of the city. The bird of the monument

embodies the free bohemian spirit of the people of Burgas

and at the same time it is a generous wink at the “glaruses” of modern times. It is no coincidence that the former strippers of German and Polish women were nicknamed on their beaches because of the insolent nature of the bird. Until they won another “number” and made a change with Deutsche marks and dollars, the matchmakers with the complexion did not detach themselves from the foreigners on the sand, as the glarus fiercely attacks its victims.

While the memory of the beach “glaruses” causes nostalgic smiles, the current reality with their feathered brethren is quite a serious problem for many citizens of Burgas. Many of the city’s older residents still remember how the Glaruses once were

they stole sausages from their balconies

from the rods. Now these domestic beauties, which started the glazing of the balconies, are obsolete and the battle has moved to the streets, where there is more food for the birds. There is almost no citizen of Burgas who has not witnessed a diving glarus, who stole the pie from his hands or was not stained with their feces.

“After all, man lives in the world of animals that appeared long before us. If anyone is to blame for the increased glarus population, it is the people. Once upon a time, when there were more houses, cats were the natural caretaker in urban areas, now with high-rise construction this function has taken away their glaruses, which attack from the air. It is not possible to approach this problem unequivocally – to indicate which animals are enemies and which are not. If we expel the Glaruses from Burgas, they will find another niche “, commented the amateur ornithologist Svetlan Kirilov. He claims that

it is no coincidence that their habitat is at sea,

as they feed on fish, and the international air route of migratory birds Via Pontica passes over the Burgas lakes, which feeds the yellow-billed birds with small birds. In addition, they stay in the city mainly from December to June, when their breeding season is, and in the summer they are exported to the sea.

“Who will explain to the children from the kindergarten that the glarus is no longer their friend? There are songs, there is a kindergarten, there is a radio called “Glarus”. In children’s art, these birds are called glarus. How will we explain that we are going to war, ie. of specialized medical surgery with these birds ?! Let’s not forget that the word glarus has become a household name on the Black Sea coast “, the municipal councilor Veselin Prenerov reacted.

“Kumcho Valcho is also a hero in children’s fairy tales, but this does not prevent us from controlling the population of wolves in our forests,” said environmentalist Daniela Bozhinova.
