How some “Ukrainian mobsters” forced Guy Ritchie to delay his new film for months

For a film worth more than 145 million euros, the cast includes stars such as Justin Statham, Hugh Grant, Josh Harnett, Aubrey Plaza, etc., Operation Fortune / “Operation Fortune: Trojan Horse” by cult director Guy Ritchie does not exist at all good luck.

The premiere of the spy thriller has been postponed again, and the reason for this can be found in the effects of the war in Ukraine. The film, which was shot in 2020, was supposed to be released in the spring of this year, but was removed from the program.

After the gathering of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border began, the original premiere date, January 22, was postponed to March. When the Russian offensive in the country began on February 24, the date for the premiere was canceled without explanation by the STX distributor.

According to the British tabloid “Daily Mail”, the reason for this delay lies in the fact that the film needs to be remade – among the negative characters in it were Ukrainian gangsters, for whom Guy Ritchie and the studio now prefer to be edited.

Scenes mentioning their nationality have already been cut from the production. But the trailer, which was uploaded to the YouTube platform, is still about a Ukrainian criminal syndicate that bought a deadly weapon.

“The Ukrainians? I can infiltrate them,” said Jason Statham’s character, the spy Orson Fortune. His assistant, played by actress Aubrey Plaza, responds with the witty: “I hope you take them to dinner first before you go into them … sexually.”

The plot itself does not particularly touch on the subject of the war in Ukraine. It’s more fun spy action with more funny jokes and explosions than realism.

At the center of the story are superspy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) and his team of top spies.

For a particularly dangerous mission, they have to resort to a desperate move – to hire the biggest Hollywood movie star Danny Francesco (Ashton Kutcher). With his help, they must penetrate the close circle of billionaire and fat arms dealer Greg Simmonds to prevent the sale of a new deadly weapon technology that threatens to disrupt the world order.

According to the publication, which cites its sources in the production, the filmmakers have ultimately decided not to indicate the nationality of the bandits, so as not to affect the “sensitivity of viewers” to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The film itself has been described as a “parody action thriller” and aims to be “a fictional entertainment, not a political statement”. Unfortunately for the creators of Operation Fortune, the reality surprises everyone and makes the topic of Ukraine quite complicated.

“Let it be clear, there are a lot of bad boys in the film … They come from all over the world. But due to the sensitivity to the ongoing war in Ukraine, it was decided that some of them should no longer be identified as Ukrainians,” he told the Daily. mail “one of the sources cited by them.

The publication also commented that Guy Ritchie’s film was the victim of unfortunate planning at a bad time, the publication commented.

As early as December last year, the entire advertising campaign for Operation Fortune was ready – trailers, posters, etc. And now, according to experts, the delay could make production even more expensive.

A new date for the premiere of the film has not yet been specified, saying only that it will be later in the year.
