How Apple could address concerns over Safari’s new iPhone design in iOS 15

One of the most important updates to iOS 15 is the completely overhauled Safari. It has been controversial, to say the least. Many users are already fed up with the new design just weeks after using it in beta. And while some seem to like the new design, there are still a few ways to make it more usable for the average person.

The first problem people seem to have with the new design is the bottom search bar. While it is more accessible during one-handed use, it still moves up the screen when touched. The second major complaint is how all of the previous controls have been centralized under a single three-dot icon.

So how do you solve them while remaining modern? First, move the search bar to the top of the screen. Replace the tab button on the far right with a privacy control so you can easily see the privacy report again.

The search bar can then move back as it would before at the top of the screen instead of being hidden by your finger at the bottom of the screen. As on the iPad and Mac, the status bar can adapt to the color of a web page. The search bar could also change color with a more opaque design.

The bottom bar could be replaced with an updated version of the previous one, but with a new design that matches the new search bar. To keep the focus on one-handed use, a new search button in the center could activate the search bar at the top of the screen. The search button could come back and invoke the share sheet, while the three dots at the top could show extensions and website settings. Bookmarks could become easily accessible again, while tabs remain exactly where they are.

New features like the redesigned tab grid and quick tab switching could remain. Instead of swiping the search bar at the bottom, users can swipe the bottom toolbar. When you create a new tab, you always get the redesigned home view.

With these changes, Apple could keep Safari’s most important new features in iOS 15 but make it more familiar and easier to use. What do you think of the new Safari in iOS 15?
