Housing – Wolfsburg – Rents for student apartments in university cities are increasing – Economy

Göttingen / Wiesloch (dpa / lni) – The rents for student apartments in some cities in Lower Saxony and Bremen have increased slightly. This is the result of the Student Housing Report 2021 presented on Wednesday by the financial service provider MLP and the Institute of German Economy (IW), for which the prices in Göttingen, Hanover and Bremen were evaluated.

In Göttingen, the warm rent was 524 euros for a 30 square meter model apartment near the university in the upper mid-range. The costs rose in the second quarter of 2021 according to the information by 1.2 percent compared to the previous year. Hannover with 472 (plus 1.0 percent) and Bremen with 471 euros (plus 0.1 percent) are in the lower midfield. In the representative study, 30 university locations across Germany were evaluated. Nationwide, the costs rose by 1.8 percent. Rents are most expensive in Munich, and cheapest in eastern German cities.

At all three locations in Lower Saxony and Bremen, the number of shared rooms and small apartments on offer increased accordingly in the 2020/21 winter semester. Michael Voigtländer from the IW mentioned as possible reasons that some had postponed their studies due to Corona or that students were moving more often to the surrounding area because of digital courses. Despite the temporary relaxation, “the level of advertisements per student is still low,” says the report. It is to be expected that the number of removals and international immigration will increase again after the pandemic.

In Göttingen, where the courses for the winter semester begin on October 25, the waiting list, according to the Studentenwerk, is about as long as it was before the pandemic. “Domestic interest has recovered,” said spokeswoman Anett Reyer-Günther. There are around 4800 places to live in Göttingen. A good 700 new rental contracts were signed for the upcoming winter semester.

Demand for dormitories in Bremen is also increasing again. “We have more inquiries than accommodation,” said Hauke Kieschnick, managing director of the student union. As of October 1st, all of the almost 1900 accommodation spaces in Bremen and Bremerhaven are rented out. Around 1000 students are currently on the waiting list, and the number is rising.

At the Studentenwerk Ostniedersachsen, which looks after dormitories in Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Hildesheim, among others, around 300 of 4,630 places are currently free. There are regional differences: At large locations such as Braunschweig and Hildesheim, the occupancy rate is higher. Here, too, demand is about as high as it was before the pandemic, and there are currently more applications than rooms are available. According to spokeswoman Christiane Thoroe, many students keep several options open at the same time.
