House of Representatives in favor of recognizing IS crimes against Yazidis as genocide

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly supports the CDA motion that declares that the terrorist organization IS has committed genocide against the Yazidi population and has committed crimes against humanity. The motion will be voted on next Tuesday.

The genocide has not yet been recognized by the United Nations Security Council or an international court. A UN investigation team has already come to that conclusion. Outgoing Foreign Minister Kaag said during the parliamentary debate about bringing an IS woman to the Netherlands that the Netherlands is committed to international recognition of genocide.

The European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the US House of Representatives, among others, have qualified IS atrocities against Yazidis, Christians and other minorities as crimes against humanity and genocide. With the motion, the House of Representatives also wants to send out such a signal and increase international pressure.

Kidnapped and murdered

On August 3, 2014, the Islamic State terrorist group began expelling hundreds of thousands of Yazidis from their homelands in northern Iraq. Many thousands were kidnapped and murdered. IS women have had a large share in the crimes.

In February of this year, the first mass funeral of identified victims was held.
