The construction of a new hotel and a theme area of the Efteling should be completed in 2024. In a press release, the amusement park said that the project will start this year. The Spookslot attraction must therefore disappear and will soon be demolished.

The new hotel is being built next to the main entrance. It will be the largest hotel in the park with 143 rooms spread over seven floors. It will have two restaurants and a spa.

The new themed area is being built on the spot where the Ghost Castle now stands. That attraction will close after the summer and will be demolished afterwards. The creepy attraction has to make way for a new themed area with an indoor attraction. The intention is that 1,250 visitors per hour will be able to visit the new attraction when it is completed in 2024.

De Efteling says that the extensions will be placed on its own site, because building outside the current park grounds entails more financial risks and challenges than building on the site.

The Efteling is currently closed due to the corona measures in the Netherlands. During the closure, preparatory works have already been done for the new hotel. Because the new hotel is being built near the main entrance, part of the parking lot has been set up as a construction site.
