An armed individual took several people hostage late August 6 in a bank branch in downtown Le Havre, AFP learned from the police. According to our information, six people were taken hostage in the premises of a Bred agency at 4.30 p.m. A first person was released at 5.35 p.m. then a second at 6:50 p.m. Four people are still being held inside the agency.

“No injuries” is not to be deplored, said the communication officer of the Departmental Directorate of Public Security (DDSP) 76 to AFP. The RAID arrived on site around 7 p.m. The man has a handgun but did not shoot.

Psychiatric disorders

The hostage taker would have two demands that he would have passed directly to the media, according to RTL: “Free Palestinian children unjustly imprisoned in Israel” and that Palestinians under the age of 40 be able to access the esplanade of the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. His motivations, however, remain unclear and confused. The 34-year-old author is known for common law offenses including the carrying of prohibited weapons and kidnapping, according to our information. He is also known for severe psychiatric disorders of the bipolar type.

The bank branch is located near the city police station. All the city’s police forces are mobilized. A security perimeter has been established between the town hall and the sub-prefecture.
